Shelley Hoyt paints “wide angle” views from Berkeley
Valerie Dow first discovered the Berkeley paintings of Shelley Hoyt sixteen years ago. Now, as a show of Hoyt’s work is exhibited in San Francisco, Dow shares her appreciation of the artist’s work.
Big open views of the bay from Berkeley vantage points are the subject of recent paintings by Oakland artist Shelley Hoyt which are being exhibited at the Dolby Chadwick Gallery in San Francisco.
The view from the Rose Garden, across Cesar Chavez Park to the Golden Gate Bridge, is a frequent subject. In fact, Hoyt has been making essentially the same beautiful paintings of Berkeley views for 21 years; she has spent the four years since her last exhibit learning to make them big.
I first saw Shelley’s work in 1995 on display at the Berkeley home store, Zia (now past tense). I had just moved to North Berkeley and was struck that she’d captured the same views that I looked for when was out I walking my dogs. The paintings were quite small, most no bigger than a file folder. The colors were soft and the impression they gave of the bay was quite serene. … Continue reading »
Premiere Ethnic Dance Festival makes its Berkeley debut
A world-renowned dance festival is crossing to Bay Bridge to make its debut in Berkeley this weekend, on June 11th and 12th, when the SF Ethnic Dance Festival performs at Zellerbach Hall.
The New York Times’ Chief Dance Critic, Alastair Macaulay, described the second of last year’s San Francisco Festival’s four weekend programs as “a glorious achievement”.
Julie Mushet, Executive Director of World Arts West, which organizes the festival, said: “We always sell out in San Francisco, and our stats … Continue reading »
Berkeley fire officials are investigating two suspicious fires that broke out within 15 minutes of one another this morning on Cragmont Avenue.
An arsonist may have set the two fires, said Avery Webb, a battalion chief in the Berkeley Fire Department.
“We had a second fire so close in time to the first fire, in such close proximity that it raises the concern that someone set the fires,” said Webb. “It raises the idea that someone traveling along the street may have set the fires.”
The fire department got a call of a vehicle and structure fire in the 500 block of Cragmont Avenue at 12:43 am, said Webb. Firefighters responded and found a 1994 Mercedes station wagon engulfed in flames. It was parked next to the garage and the flames scorched the garage door. The family living in the house had exited, he said. … Continue reading »

Berkeley man escapes injury when tree falls on his car
Jerry Holl was backing his car up in front of his home on Spruce Street Tuesday evening when Wham!, a huge limb from an oak tree fell on his car. Luckily, Holl was not hurt and made his way out of the passenger door.
Berkeleysider Daryl Austern was driving by around 6:30pm, right after the limb fell, and snapped these photos. She said Spruce was closed between Los Angeles and Keith as city workers sawed the limb into pieces.
