General Appliance closes its doors after 72 years

General Appliance, which has been selling appliances in Berkeley under numerous names since 1939, abruptly shut its doors on Monday.

The store, located on Shattuck between Dwight and Ward, is still stocked with refrigerators, cabinets and other kitchen goods, but has a sign on the door announcing the closure.

Efforts to reach Don Collins, the store’s owner, to discover why he shut the business, were not successful. There was no message about the closure on the store’s answering machine or on its website.

But appliance stores have been facing increasing competition in recent years from the Internet and big box merchandisers like Home Depot. … Continue reading »

Berkeley schools see new appointments at the top

It’s like a game of musical chairs at Berkeley schools right now, as a group of new faces move into top positions following the departure of key personnel.

John Muir and Oxford Elementary schools, King Middle School and Berkeley Technology Academy (B-Tech) have new principals, and there’s a new vice-principal at Berkeley High.

Jason Lustig’s decision to pursue an academic course at Harvard, which saw him step down from his position as principal of King Middle School at the end of this academic year, set the ball in motion for several appointments that followed. Lustig, was in the post for four years after a stint as principal at Cragmont Elementary School. … Continue reading »

Berkeley’s future art museum already a magnet for art

A certain white wall on Center Street is clearly proving very inviting for street artists on the hunt for a fresh canvas.

The building on the corner of Center and Oxford, which will one day house the Berkeley Art Museum after it moves from its seismically unsafe home on Bancroft Way, has been used by a number of artists of late.
