Berkeley bicyclists go bare for World Naked Bike Ride
Update, 6:20 pm: Think we went too far posting a video of the naked cyclists? Not worried about nudity in this context? Take the poll on our Facebook page so we can get your feedback.
Update, 5:45pm: After YouTube took down our video (a first for Berkeleyside — being censored), we have uploaded the same video on vimeo with a perhaps less offensive still front image. It can be viewed above.
Update, 4:25pm: YouTube took down our video of the Naked Bike Day cyclists in Berkeley because of the nudity content. Stay posted –we will try to replace it or at least provide still images.
Just over a dozen Bay Area cyclists assembled in People’s Park Saturday to roll out Berkeley’s World Naked Bike Ride 2011. “As bare as you dare,” was the general rule at the gathering. There weren’t many regulations past that.
In Berkeley, a church congregation is dismayed
A congregation that has run out of patience on Sunday demonstrated passively outside its own church while three morning masses were being held inside. The protest, about 150-strong, was directed at Father John Direen, leader of St Joseph The Worker Church at 1640 Addison Street, and it represented the culmination of many months of frustration and disappointment at actions taken by Direen, who has been in the post for two years.
The protests were timed to coincide with a visit from the Bishop of Oakland, the Most Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, who met with Father Direen and a select number of parishioners on Saturday.
“We are asking the Bishop to change the priest,” said Mario Ibarra, who has worked at the church for many years, including with Father Direen, and says the protest has been a long time coming. “This is an explosion of emotions because everyone is tired of him,” he said, speaking of Direen. … Continue reading »
Faith-based urban farm opens in Berkeley
Sunday marked the grand opening of Urban Adamah, the first faith-based, modern urban farm in West Berkeley, at 1050 Parker Street near San Pablo Avenue, opposite Fantasy Studios. The one-acre farm with Jewish roots offers a residential fellowship program for young adults, summer camps for kids and teens, and plans to help feed the needy in the community.
On an uncharacteristically warm June day, several hundred people, including many families with young children, turned out to tour the farm, meet chickens, bake pizzas, pickle cucumbers, make ice cream, and whip up bicycle smoothies — as well as learn a little about the philosophy behind the farm, currently boasting greens, squashes, tomatoes, and other summer crops.
Local urban farming icon Novella Carpenter welcomed the newbies to the neighborhood, along with Assemblymember Nancy Skinner and Councilmember Darryl Moore. Fellow West Berkeley urban farmer Jim Montgomery, who walked his goats over to say hello, was a big hit with the younger set. … Continue reading »
Ike’s famous sandwiches may soon be in Berkeley
Sandwich maker extraordinaire Ike Shehadeh was in Berkeley the other day, scouting out a location near the campus with a view to potentially opening a sandwich shop here with some business partners.
Shehadeh currently runs three sandwich spots: Ike’s Place in San Francisco, an outlet at the School of Engineering on the Stanford campus, and another shop on the Redwood Shores.
Shehadeh said he would like to be in Berkeley — the building he was looking at was on Bancroft Way, near the Bears Lair Pub — but he is wary of applying to the city to open a business. “There’s a history with Berkeley in the way it treats small businesses,” he said. “Everyone speaks about it.” … Continue reading »
