What’s happening at Cody’s? Not much

The Cody’s building on the corner of Telegraph and Haste has been vacant since the bookstore closed its one-time flagship in 2006.

Berkeleysider Sandy Friedland spotted some work in the building and took the photo on the left, wondering whether something might be resurrected on the site.

Property owner Ken Sarachan, who also owns Rasputin Music and the long-vacant, controversial site on the opposite corner of Telegraph and Haste, could not be reached today. No permit is posted … Continue reading »

Summer cooking camps: tales of solar oven berry crisp

The long foggy days of summer in Berkeley mean summer camp for many kids. In such a food-focused town it’s not surprising to learn that camps designed to encourage edible adventures are popular among the next generation of home cooks and potential professional chefs.

What may surprise you is the skills the young students master, like making pasta from scratch, using a culinary blowtorch, and preparing a four-course family meal. And the lessons the children learn: following a recipe is mostly a good thing, sometimes a dish missing many of its ingredients doesn’t taste so great, and working as a team means sitting down sooner to eat the culinary creations.

For young ones in town there are several cooking camps to choose from; we spotlight three here where children learn kitchen techniques such as knife skills, measuring and mixing, and reading a recipe, along with cleaning up and the pleasure of enjoying a meal together. … Continue reading »

Rocking once a day keeps the doctor away

Will Crum refuses to stop rocking – at least for a year anyway. The Berkeley guitarist and rock singer pledged to play one guerrilla rock show per day for 365 days.

Twenty-five days in, Crum, alongside drummer Danny Hodge, is on track with his goal. The rockers play obscure venues, plugging amplifiers into outdoor outlets and sometimes sneaking into buildings to borrow power.

“We’ve played at an Ikea or Rite Aid and other places,” Crum said. “We’ve crashed the San Francisco Art Institute or Berkeley University [sic] or anywhere that’s an interesting place to have music.”

Crum posts all of his shows to his Facebook page the next day. His friend Joe W. Shapiro and his girlfriend Jean McCloskey help capture the footage.

There are only a few rules to the experiment: play one show per day, play random places and play without a generator.

“We find a place we want, then we always find a power outlet,” Crum said. “Sometimes there’s one on a roof and we have to climb up there and do it.” … Continue reading »

Grand Theft – 200 block of Hillcrest Road

A Danville woman called to report theft from an unsecured garage in the 200 block of Hillcrest Road between December 2010 and January 2011. A Berkeley family member had passed away in December and she stored some items in the garage of that home for the time being. She called BPD on July 22, 2011 at about 1:56 p.m., to document the theft as she discovered that 5 oriental rugs valued at approximately $10,000 were gone as well as a wedding ring. The theft occurred sometime in January she believes. She required a police report number to file an insurance claim. No suspects and no leads in the case. … Continue reading »

Also on the agenda for the two-day event — which is free — are stunt kite flying lessons, free kite making and a candy drop for kids, and lots … Continue reading »

The countdown is on for the city’s first Summer Outdoor Movie series which will take place on the four Saturdays in August on Center Street in downtown Berkeley. And costume contests, tied in to the free screenings, will be part of the fun for movie-goers.

Each film will be preceded with a costume contest with thematic prizes at 7:30 pm, MC’d by local dignitaries.

On August 6, wear your pirate costume to watch The Princess Bride; on August 13 sport the goofiest bow tie or wear the most scout badges for Up; dust off your safari attire for Raiders of the Lost Ark on August 20; and, on August 27, dress as your favorite character from The Big Lebowski. Pre-feature cartoons and short films will round out the evenings.

Center Street will be closed to traffic between Shattuck Avenue and Oxford Street while entertainers from the Downtown MusicFest will be on hand to serenade you with steel drums, violins, and Brazilian guitars. … Continue reading »
