Whither the sun?

A gray, dense fog dripping moisture has settled over the Bay Area, bringing with it the region’s customary summer gloom. Temperatures are a full 10 degrees lower than average.

Today and tomorrow in Berkeley should start with fog and clear by the afternoon. Friday will bring clear skies, but it won’t warm up until the weekend. Temperatures will not top 60 in town until Saturday, according to WeatherUnderground.

Are you a fog fan? Or a sun fan?

Personally, I wish it were a little warmer and last summer’s chilly weather was almost depressing – but I have friends and family in the Midwest and South and it’s miserably hot there now, so I am not going to complain at all about our delightful weather here.

It’s depressing and more disconcertingly if feels like late November / early December with lows near 50 F at night.  It’s an easy correction oddly as my neighbor informed me last evening.  Just have the Berkeley City Council pass a resolution to ban the damn stuff until later this fall.  She told me that “They know all about that sort of thing”.

There’s magic at the end of the day when the sun goes below the level of the fog.  Looks like that golden light is about to appear.

Can’t get enough of it. It’s one of the great things about living in the Bay Area. My least favourite time of year is September and October, but at least winter is just around the corner as we sweat our way through those grimly and relentlessly sunny months…

Fog does fascinating things with sound. I was walking around the Holy Hill campuses last night and there was such peace and quiet, even though the Amtrak’s blasting horn was carried farther than normal. Strange to descrbe.

It was also magical to see the cloud cover rolling in just overhead. I come from the Central Valley, and if you get fog you get a big blanket of white in front of your face. The way this fog descends from above looks like God is erasing the Berkeley hills gradually from the top down.

Not that I want those hills to go away! God and I may disagree on that…
