A patch of dirt on the unremarkable corner of Shattuck Avenue and Lincoln Street was brought to life last Friday after an outbreak of public-made environmental art, led by environmental artist Zach Pine.

A “welcome sign” of three sticks in a pyramid shape with an array of flowers and rocks, on a coconut shell foundation, steered passerbys to several buckets of shells, sticks, flowers and leaves. The empty space across the sidewalk was the canvas, and soon several people were building towers, mandalas, and … Continue reading »

Aquatic Park pitches for Berkeley Lab 2nd campus tonight

Yesterday, Golden Gate Fields had its turn in the spotlight at a public meeting held by the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab to discuss that location as one of the six possibles on its shortlist for its second campus. Richmond, Alameda and Oakland have all had their chance to shine, and Monday August 8th will see a pitch by Wareham Development for a Berkeley/Emeryville site.

Rob Ewing belongs to a long, honorable and frustrating lineage of Bay Area musicians whose consistently inspired creative output is matched by a seeming indifference to self-promotion.

A passionately expressive trombonist, skilled bassist, effective drummer and often brilliant arranger, Ewing has forged enduring ties with a fascinating community of musicians, artists steeped in jazz, but unconcerned about traditionalist notions of “the canon.”

On Saturday, Ewing performs at Jupiter with his band Disappear Incompletely, an ensemble that explores … Continue reading »
