NEW DIRECTION  Arts & Crafts furniture store The Craftsman Home at 3048 Claremont Avenue closed its doors after many years on August 13. Owner Lee Jester says he’s moving on to new ventures, still specializing in American Craftsman-style home furnishings.

Where there’s smoke, there’s sewer testing

The City of Berkeley recently began a 10-year program of smoke testing the sanitary sewer system. The testing reveals places where there are defects or improper connections in the sewer system, and is particularly intended to find places where the separate stormwater drainage system may infiltrate into the sewers. Excess water into the sanitary sewers can overload the system, pump stations and treatment plants, and could cause overflow of untreated wastewater during storms.

With open doors, Firehouse Bazaar creates community

This summer art began to thrive at the corner of Martin Luther King and Adeline. Every Saturday, members of Berkeley’s Firehouse Collective gather at the Firehouse Bazaar to share artwork, entertainment and food with the community.

“We’re right by the Ashby BART,” said Firehouse Director Tom Franco. “The Ashby Flea Market is happening at the same time. It’s the old police station. So we kind of jokingly call this the police house.”

Franco, along with partner Julia Lazar and members of the collective, opened the bazaar doors this summer. He said the old building is full up with painters, food artisans, ceramists, and every kind of Berkleyan. … Continue reading »

After a decade, Berkeley brings home bowling “Meat Axe”

The annual Cal-Stanford football game is not the only sporting competition between the East and South Bay that results in an axe being carried off by the victors. Less well known, but contested with no less spirit, is the annual “Meat Axe” tournament between the Berkeley Lawn Bowling Club and its Palo Alto counterpart.
