Summer Cinema: Screening The Big Lebowski Saturday

We’ve had The Princess Bride, Pixar’s Up, and Raiders of the
Lost Ark
 – and every week the number of participants has swelled at the Center Street outdoor Summer Cinema series, as people take advantage of a pedestrianized street, great food and drink options and a free movie screening.

Saturday sees the grand finale with The Big Lebowski showing on the wall of the future Berkeley Art Museum in the Bank of America parking lot.

Mind your peas and carrots: the Ukulady is in town.

Performing in a toy store is not something new to the Ukulady (Thessaly Lerner).  She performed for a group of kids in Heebe Jeebe General Store in Petaluma, but performing at a toy store that haunted her as a child is a whole new territory for the children’s entertainer.

Students need a booster shot to attend school

As students in Berkeley prepare to return to school by buying binder paper and pencils, they need something else on their back-to-school shopping list: a booster shot.

A new California law requires all students entering grades 7 through 12 to provide proof they have had a Tdap shot, which provides protection against whooping cough, a bacterial disease that can be deadly.

More recent atrocities may have pushed the political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe out of the news, but the devastation wrought by the iron-fisted Robert Mugabe and his kleptocratic ZANU-PF party continues apace. During a decade of incomprehensible hardship, the spirit of Zimbabwe’s people has been buoyed by the music of Mawungira Enharira, a hugely popular band that puts a sophisticated, contemporary spin on mbira, a folkloric Shona style played on the thumb piano of the same name.
