Residents learn about PG&E pipelines running through city
Lula Greene has lived in her house on 66th Street for 24 years, but she wasn’t aware until March that her home sits near a major gas pipeline.
That’s when PG&E, following a new law created in response to the deadly 2010 San Bruno explosion, mailed notices to hundreds of Berkeley residents telling them of their proximity to the line.
The information was worrisome enough to bring Greene and others to a community meeting at Rosa Parks Elementary School Tuesday … Continue reading »
Local Hero, the latest Berkeley band, issue their first EP
Local Hero, an aspiring Berkeley group, has just released their first extended play album, The Aldgate, with five tracks. Three of the group are connected with Berkeley High while the fourth attends College Prep in North Oakland.
“This is the first time we’ve had something for sale,” said Alex MacKay, lead singer and guitarist for the group. MacKay graduated from BHS in June and has deferred admission to the University of Toronto for a year to pursue his … Continue reading »

Berkeley High’s Kehlani Parrish performs in AGT finals
Kehlani Parrish, a 16-year-old Berkeley High junior, performed Tuesday night with her band Poplyfe in the finals of this season’s NBC show America’s Got Talent.
After a stunning run-up to the show’s finals in Las Vegas, Poplyfe got mixed reviews from the judges for their medley of Queen songs last night, and Parrish was in tears after the performance.
“I thought some of the performance of the singing was a bit off,” said judge Piers Morgan. “But you [Parrish] … Continue reading »
Where in Berkeley?
Know where this is? Take a guess and let us know in the Comments.
Update, 8:55am: A bit of a trick question this week. Several readers assumed these were tanks at Berkeley’s Trumer Pils brewery. In fact they are recently installed distillation storage tanks of the Takara Sake distillery located at 708 Addison Street — at the intersection of Allston Way and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Reader tor_berg got it right and is this week’s winner!
