Sarah Henry, Berkeleyside’s food writer since March 2010, was last night presented with the Karola Saekel Craib Excellence in Food Journalism award in recognition of her fine writing and reporting.

The San Francisco chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier, an international philanthropic society of female leaders in the culinary world, established the fellowship in honor of Karola Saekel Craib, the San Francisco Chronicle reporter whose writing helped to define food journalism as we know it. The city of Oakland sent a draft Environmental Impact Report about the store to Berkeley in July when the council was on recess. Berkeley is holding … Continue reading »

THE NICK OF TIME Nick’s Lounge, at 3218 Adeline near Fairview, has been a neighborhood fixture for almost 50 years. He holds karaoke nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays and has live jazz two Saturdays a month. The last Saturday of each month is an “East Bay Open Mic” night, from 7 to 9 p.m. … Continue reading »

During the month of February, there were 11 vacant storefronts along the top stretch of Solano Avenue, giving the shopping district a slightly beleaguered air.

While the soft economy accounts for some of that vacant frontage, City Councilmember Jesse Arreguín suspects some landlords in Berkeley are keeping rents artificially high, making it difficult for small business owners to find suitable retail space.

Arreguín thinks that Berkeley could minimize the number of vacant storefronts by charging landlords a fee when buildings … Continue reading »

Several Berkeleyside readers witnessed the dramatic result of a collision yesterday on Shattuck Avenue which saw a car overturn and land on its side. According to the Berkeley Police Department, the accident happened shortly after 3:00pm between Lincoln and Virginia. Remarkably, no-one was injured as a result of the incident which involved two vehicles. The overturned car, which landed on its passenger side, was a silver Honda SUV. The southbound lane of Shattuck Avenue was temporarily closed while the accident was investigated and the street cleared. The police have not as yet released details on the cause of the collision.
