No more morning cappuccinos with pooch on Peet’s patio

No dogs allowed

Berkeleyside contributing photographer Nancy Rubin happened to be sitting outside Peet’s on Fourth Street the other day when she saw a sign being affixed to a garbage can that read: “By order of Health and Human Services: No animals are allowed on Peet’s patio area. City of Berkeley.”

The wording certainly suggests the city is cracking down on four-legged friends keeping the company of their latte-loving owners. However a quick call to Berkeley’s public information officer reveals this is not … Continue reading »

Fall Free for All includes Jane Lynch, dance and music

The second Fall Free for All, a start-of-season celebration for Cal Performances, will be held this Sunday at various venues on the Cal campus from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The most popular event on the day — where, as the name implies — everything is free, will be an appearance by actress Jane Lynch, best known for her compelling character on the hit show Glee (and host, last Sunday, of the Emmy Awards). Lynch will be talking about her new book, Happy Accidents, at the Pauley Ballroom at 2:30 p.m. Wristbands for admission to Lynch’s talk will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from 11 a.m. at the Cal Student Store in the Student Center.

Other highlights include performances by the New Century Chamber Orchestra, AXIS Dance Company, CK Ladzekpo West African Music and Dance Ensemble, and the Berkeley Symphony Wind Ensemble — all in Zellerbach Hall. The day opens with a fanfare by the Cal Band at 10:30 a.m. in Lower Sproul Plaza. Numerous student groups will be performing outside at various spots on the campus.

The full schedule is on the Free for All site.

Farm-to-fork tours spotlight local green businesses

Restaurant chefs at Five, Gather, and Revival will talk slow money and sustainable food at an upcoming green tour.

Three years ago, Marissa LaMagna started Bay Area Green Tours, a nonprofit, shoestring operation now headquartered in the David Brower Center (and largely staffed by eager, eco-conscious, unpaid interns) because she wanted to showcase the best sustainable farms and food, buildings and businesses, energy practices and employment opportunities in Berkeley and beyond.

The green tour business with a biodiesel bus takes people from near and far to see for themselves and hear the stories behind successful sustainable enterprises … Continue reading »

Cal tuition protest ends in scuffles, arrests

A student protest about budget cuts and tuition hikes yesterday on the Cal campus ended in scuffles and two arrests. Hundreds of students marched on the campus and then occupied Tolman Hall. The students were dispersed at around 9 p.m. last night.

Drew Phillips, 25, was arrested at Tolman Hall for battery on a peace officer with injury, wearing a mask in a commission of a crime and resisting arrest. Phillips had allegedly grabbed a magazine clip from UC Police Officer Donna Chapman. He was taken to the lockup at the Berkeley Police Department. Richard Clemons, 30, was arrested for battery on a peace officer with injury and resisting arrest at Tolman Hall. The arrest occurred after chunks of concrete and a chair were thrown at officers. He was taken to Santa Rita jail.

According to the comprehensive reports in the Daily Cal, the protests had been noisy but peaceful throughout the day. The demonstrators had occupied parts of Tolman Hall for over seven hours. The scuffles erupted when police attempted to prevent other demonstrators from entering the building. Tolman Hall has been designated as seismically unsafe and is not used for classrooms.

The UC Board of Regents is considering a plan that would increase tuition to $22,000 by 2015.
