On Veterans’ Day, a Berkeley concert to support soldiers

Berkeley singer Nell Robinson has organized tonight's benefit concert for veterans

Tonight, on Veterans’ Day, a concert at Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage, organized by Berkeley resident Nell Robinson, offers the opportunity to enjoy great music while helping a non-profit which provides support for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, service members and their families.

Nell Robinson’s annual Soldier Stories Benefit Concert includes an art/photography exhibit, an art workshop and a live and silent auction.

Nell Robinson will be joined by musicians Jim Nunally, Joe Craven, Keith Little and Chuck Ervin for an evening of Americana string band music reflecting soldier stories from before the American Revolution to the current day, with a guest appearance by the Soldier Band (musician-veterans).

The concert proceeds go to the non-profit organization The Coming Home Project which was created to heal the invisible wounds of war for the veterans, their families and the caregivers, in a multi-dimensional program of retreats and community networking. Among other things, CHP help soldiers who are struggling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Roughly 40% or 1,000,000 veterans have or will return from the wars with a form of PTSD.

Speaking about the show, Nell Robinson says: “We are deeply concerned about the sacrifice and burden on the shoulders of a very small number of US servicemen and servicewomen while we here at home can go about our daily lives without having to confront the reality that we are at war. A friend of mine has called this the ‘true national debt.'”

The Soldier Stories benefit concert starts at 8:00 pm tonight, Friday, November 11, at Freight & Salvage Coffee House, 2020 Addison Street, Berkeley. Concert Admission: $20.00. Admission to the Art/Photography Exhibit and Live/Silent Auction is free and runs from noon to 9:00 pm.
