A two-alarm fire that broke out at 4:02 am this morning in a vacant, mixed use building at 833 Bancroft Way was set intentionally, according to Berkeley Deputy Fire Chief Gil Dong,

There were multiple fires in the building which caused an estimated $15,000 worth of damage.

The fires were extinguished by 4:59 am, and there were no injuries to firefighers or civilians.

Because the fire department determined that the cause of the fire was arson, it has been referred to the Berkeley Police Department.

This building was at one time also the home of Creative Arts (Black Lizard) publishers. That company declared bankruptcy about 10 years ago leaving a lot of controversy. It was alleged that the publishers played fast and loose with their writer’s money.

Plenty of transients, dopeheads, scavengers, etc in my hood (west of san pablo) after dark.  A good friend recently bought and remodeled a house on channing and 6th. There was a whole crew of dopeheads living under the house and in the garage that he had to drive out before they could begin work on the house. It took several days of constant monitoring to make sure they didn’t come back after hours.
