Shop Talk: The ins and outs of Berkeley businesses

Pro Wheels absorbed Velo Sport

RIDING IN TANDEM Velo-Sport Bicycles at 1615 University Avenue has closed and been absorbed into Pro Wheels scooter shop at 1601 University. Pro Wheels confirms it is now working with Velo and selling bicycles along with scooters. [Hat-tip: EarlyMorningCoffee.]

Safeway on Solano

MULTIPLE MAKEOVERS Safeway is to close its Solano Avenue store for six months in order to remodel. The store, at 1500 Solano across the border in Albany, serves the north Berkeley community. [Correction, 9:00pm: Safeway on Solano is not closing imminently. Plans for a complete rebuild will be coming before the City of Albany in the next month or so. A date for the start of construction has not been determined.] Safeway’s Shattuck Avenue store will close on Saturday March 17th for 5-6 months in order to undergo a makeover.  (We apologize for the error in our reporting on the Safeway in Albany. Probably shows that we should stick to Berkeley and what we know!)

Verizon on Solano

OPEN CALL Verizon has now opened its new store at 1831 Solano Avenue. It has taken over the space formerly occupied by Front Row Video. Ira Serkes snapped a girl scout cookie stand outside the new store on March 10 (right)

New Sotheby's office

NEW HOME FOR HOME PROS East Bay Sotheby’s International Realty is holding a grand opening for its new, and newly spiffed up, Berkeley office at 2 Tunnel Road in the Claremont neighborhood. It is EBSIR’s sixth office in the region, all of which are owned by Mark Attarha and Nahid Nassiri. The opening takes place on March 15 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm and all are welcome.

  • Shattuck Safeway is still open, I think Saturday is the last day.

  • Thanks for clarification. We’ll make the correction.

  • Stefan Lasiewski

Do we know when Safeway on Solano will close? I assume that they won’t close at the same time as Safeway on Shattuck.

  • The Sharkey

I’m surprised Safeway is closing both locations at the same time.
I would have thought they’d want to leave at least one open at all times.

Two Safeway’s closing? That leaves the one on College and the Mega-Safeway in El Cerrito. Glad I don’t do much shopping at any of the major grocery chains.

this is a real bummer for  lot of us middle income types! Guess i’ll have to brave the parking and atti-rude at Berkeley Bowl again.

Does anyone know whats going on at the old Ross store (and yearly Halloween store) downtown?  Is there a tenant?

  • Mom

Two tenants was what I’d read, hence the upstairs remodel to not be a dark pit.

  • The Sharkey

Might I suggest Berkeley Bowl West?

I can’t stand the original Berkeley Bowl, but I find BB West to be much more enjoyable.
There’s always parking in the overflow lot across the street, and if you can make it there before noon on the weekends it’s usually not too croweded.

I hope Safeway will take care of the displaced employees.  I
have been going to the Solano location for the last 8 years and most of those employees have been there longer then that.

Downstairs, Walgreen. Upstairs, I think it is office space.
