Berkeley police identify suspect who was shot

Berkeley police have identified the man who was shot by an officer on April 13 as Calvester Stewart, a 20-year-old Berkeley resident.

Stewart was shot in the arm and the leg after he fled from a traffic stop and went inside an apartment in the 900 block of Delaware Street, according to a police statement. He came out of the apartment and shot at several Berkeley police officers, several of whom returned fire.

“Stewart then continued to flee and was confronted by an officer who shot and wounded Stewart,” said the press release.

Stewart was taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. When he was released he was sent to jail, where he is being held on suspicion of violating his probation. Berkeley police are asking the District Attorney to charge him with several counts of attempted murder against a peace officer.

Stewart was on probation for a January 2011 case of negligent discharge of a firearm.

Police did not release the name of the officer who shot Stewart. The DA’s office is investigating the shooting.

19 and already two run-ins with police involving guns. We’d all be better off if this “person” was shot dead.

Does Berkeleyside actually need a policy against anonymous folks calling for the death of this or that person?   (And will they make a game out of how close anonymous folks can come to crossing that line before violating policy?)

He/She didn’t call for the person’s death, just stated the opinion that society would be better off without this particular person.  This is what anonymous people calling for someone’s death looks like:

    Typical twisting by Thomas Lord.

Calvester obviously has a death wish shooting at cops. Oh but to acknowledge the obvious is offensive to the tender sensibilities of the kind and compassionate  Bruce Love, a.k.a TL.

You know, at the age of 20, dude has had a couple shoot-outs, and anyone wonders who he would be merciful of? I’m sorry — I really am — but why didn’t BPD just shoot to kill? This guy is a danger to innocent people and obviously has a sincere desire to go out in some kinda blaze of glory. Sad, but I’d rather he be shot dead than be out instigating shoot-outs in places where people are living… seriously.

And I want to add; He is someone’s child, someone’s grandchild, perhaps someone’s daddy… but he’s proved himself unsuitable for society. That is sad on all counts.
