Deer fawns make themselves at home on Berkeley street

A doe took her two fawns for a stroll Sunday afternoon on Tacoma Avenue. Lauren Richmond, who took the photographs here, said they appeared to be remarkably relaxed given that they were grazing in a built-up, urban environment.

Earlier this month there were reports of deer charging at pedestrians and their dogs in Berkeley.

I was driving north on Euclid and saw a young deer running towards me in the middle of the street.  I stopped about 60 feet from it, but it jumped the railing into the raised divider just past Euclid/Eunice and then jumped down to the lower part of Euclid in front of other cars.  Luckily it wasn’t hit and seemed ok enough to run away.

We need to keep deer out of our backyards. The game warden says that deer remember where they are born and return there to have their young. Mother deer with young can be very aggressive. Backyards with water fountains, roses and organic vegetables and fruits are heaven to deer. Put wire fencing around gardens, esp. roses, and keep deer out of backyards. Everyone thinks wild animals are “so cute,” until they are overrun with them. If we manage our habitats, deer will be forced to go where it is more habitable for them. If we continue to make backyards available to deer, we’ll soon see more mountain lions coming into town, like the one near Shattuck last year. Between the deer and the turkeys, gourmet ghetto takes on a whole new meaning.

Tacoma Ave. is a great shortcut for us on the way down to Solano. We used to go down there more when the Oaks was still operating.

    Especially when Bambi was playing!

  • BerkeleyDeer

While I am 100% opposed to this, I have to agree Jane is right. We love feasting on your gardens and drinking your water. We don’t like it when you fence off your gardens!

WE’RE HERE! WE’RE DEER! GET USED TO IT!

     Dear Deer:

You have been our neighbors forever and we like it.  Keep it up!

     Let’s build a wall!

  • Guestinian

No problem.  We can reintroduce grizzly bears to keep the mountain lions away.

Fawns may be “cute” — but really, these are rodents with long legs, a nuisance, and their mothers do not take kindly to strangers approaching, and can attack. Here’s hoping Animal Control has a plan. And for heaven’s sake, don’t feed them! People and wildlife—never a good mix. Plus, your garden can disappear overnight!

I don’t know grizzly bears ever lived around here but mountain lions certainly did and a few of those would make short work out of the excess deer population.  And they would keep people from sleeping in the parks and sitting too long in one place on the sidewalk.

  • Guestinian

I get it about the roses, but why do you eat agapanthus?

  • Guestinian

Grizzlies probably didn’t live around here, but if they’re ever going to return to California, they need to start somewhere — and what better place than Shattuck Avenue?  Although agree that the mountain-lion-only solution would be more sensitive to the local ecosystem.

    Please eat ivy.

This is my neighborhood. Often, when I walk my dog late at night, I see the deer. They do not like it when you walk toward them but they don’t do anything as long as you turn around and walk away from them.  Remember where the creek is (running east-west, down the center of the block between San Pedro and Catalina)  and walk on the  opposite side of the street so the deer can gain access to the creek if they want to.  Don’t get between Mom and her babies.
Follow these simple rules and they won’t bother you.
Act like you own the place and they don’t deserve to be there -  and you’re asking for trouble.
And if you’re walking a dog, hang on tight.  :-)

Agapathos ever so tasty , especially with some pine nuts and rose petals!

  • batard

    Time to eat the deer.

  • Heather_W_62

No offense to BerkeleyDeer, who I hold dear, but I tend to agree Batard.

  • Live_and_Let_Live

Shall I post what they think of you?
