Op/Ed: Police Chief erred but should be supported

Police Chief Michael Meehan

In response to Berkeleyside’s May 29 article, “Poll: Police Chief’s reputation tarnished, not department,” in which we summarized the results of a reader poll about Berkeley Police Chief Michael Meehan, Pastor Leslie R. White of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Berkeley has written an open letter of support for the chief. “Good people, who work hard, will make mistakes and sometimes apparent non-thinking acts. I hold that the Police Chief’s reputation is not tarnished, though this year, 2012, has proven he is not flawless,” he writes. Read his full letter published in our Opinionator section.

Berkeleyside welcomes submissions of op-ed articles of 500 to 800 words. We ask that we are given first refusal to publish. Topics should be Berkeley-related and local authors are preferred. Please email submissions to us. Berkeleyside will publish op-ed pieces at its discretion.

    A link to the op/Ed would help….

Fwiw, the separate section for opinion pieces is not really working out all that well. Can’t they just be articles like any other?

    I’ve added the link.

We very much want to keep opinion and news separate on Berkeleyside. So we’re trailing op-ed style pieces on the main page, but keeping the content in its own section. As the volume of opinion pieces grows, I hope you’ll find a separate section a good idea.

Nice to see some tolerance. We often have a little too much mistrust and accusation. We are blessed to have a tradition of unusually fine law enforcement in Berkeley. Our police department is well trained in accepting and understanding differences among people, and being compassionate. We can also be compassionate and expect that Police chiefs can make mistakes and have support from their community.

When people, including police chiefs, make mistakes, they should apologize for them.  There is nothing
to indicate that Michael Meehan really thinks he made mistakes.
