Man holds police at bay with a pit bull dog in Berkeley: the headline and story that grabbed the attention of most readers this week. Discussion in the comment focused on dogs breeds, and which are the most dangerous, as well as policing in the city.

On Monday we published a story about the downtown Berkeley Ambassadors program (above). Natalie Orenstein shadowed an ambassador and spent time on the streets talking to some of the city’s transient population. The live issue of the proposed ban on sidewalk sitting made the article particularly timely.

Our special July 4th It List proved popular this week. Check out, also, how Berkeleysiders actually spent Independence Day in our crowd-sourced July 4th round-up.

Berkeley’s decision to nix the police department’s plans to get an armored vehicle to share with UC Berkeley and Albany provoked a lively discussion among readers.

Adopt a Pet: Gracie, a wisp of a pooch looking for a home

Gracie is one of the smallest dogs to have arrived at our shelter. She can’t weigh more than three or four pounds. But this little wisp of a pooch is leggy and elegant, and is comfortable in most any element.

Despite her slight build, she loves to play with dogs of all sizes. She spends her days hanging out in the lobby at the shelter, playing with the staff’s dogs and entertaining shelter visitors.

Of course, she also loves people. She is a good lap dog, and enjoys curling up in the nearest lap. That being said, she does enjoy her walks as well. But the moment her walker stops to sit on the bench or the grass, up pops Gracie and before you know it she has made herself at home in whatever crevice she can find. … Continue reading »
