Shop Talk: The ins and outs of Berkeley businesses

GOODBYE SAG PANEER Zaika, the Indian restaurant that opened last year in the historic Koerber Building on University Avenue, has shut its doors. Paul Hoch writes: “Zaika’s has been evicted!” He saw the eviction papers on the front door on Aug. 10. They have since been removed but the windows are now covered over. The eatery, which offered  “authentic cuisine from the Indian sub-continent,” lasted almost exactly one year.

NEW MOVES Woolly Mammoth Childcare and Preschool, which lost its old space at 2310 Bancroft because of an impending apartment complex, is relocating into the old Video Maniacs site on University Avenue and Sacramento. Emilia O’Toole and Mayra Dana founded the school in 1987, basing the curriculum ion the works of Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson.

IT’S GREEK TO ME Nicholas Eftimiou, who was trained at Le Cordon Blue and who has cooked at Kokkari in San Francisco, Evvia in Palo Alto, and Dio Deka in Los Gatos, will open Pathos Restaurant and Bar at 2430 Shattuck Ave. in early October, according to Diablo Magazine. Eftimiou told the magazine the food would be high-end Greek and organic, but casual and affordable. Most of the food will be cooked in a wood-burning oven, with an emphasis “on seafood and staples like marinated grilled calamari and moussaka.” The filo dough will be handmade.

COFFEE TO GO? Whole Foods on Telegraph is doing a major upgrade, installing better and greener lighting and moving around some departments. The most noticeable change, however, may be the large gleaming coffee cart it has installed at the entrance, the place that used to be reserved for flowers. So get ready to get revved up as you enter this palace of organic.

Sorry to see Zaika go.  We only discovered it about 6-8 weeks ago, and it was really good.  Still holding out hope that they might reopen someplace else someday.

Emilia, Mayra, and Woolly Mammoth are great.  So glad they have found a new space!

Wooly Mammoth will be a great addition to a rather ugly corner!

I wish Woolly Mammoth good luck, but it seems like an especially noisy and dangerous corner  for a preschool.  And drop-offs in that small parking lot could be difficult.

I didn’t take a picture of it, but they’ve put up redwood fencing around the Sacramento side of the parking lot, and put up a barrier on the University side.  Guess you’ll have to use street parking to drop your kid off.

Thanks for this post about Zaika — it may have saved my marriage. I tried to take my husband there this past weekend, explaining that we needed to have dinner at this great Indian place I had enjoyed for lunch a few weeks earlier … and it was gone. I swore up and down that it had been there only recently. I was mystified. He (playfully) accused me of making the whole thing up. :^P

What a wonderful surprise to be vindicated!
