Berkeley hills neighbors anxious after recent robberies
About 60 people crowded into Northbrae Community Church on Thursday night to learn how better to protect themselves in the face of a big jump this month in home burglaries, two of which turned violent.
Most of the neighbors came from the North Berkeley hills area near Fairlawn Drive, though Councilwoman Susan Wengraf said she saw people at the meeting from around her district, District 6, who were worried about safety issues.
The neighborhood is part of the Berkeley Police Department’s Beat 2, which has seen a steady rise in home burglaries since September. That month there were just two home burglaries, with five the following month, eight in November and 12 already this month, as of Wednesday, according to CrimeView Community statistics, which pulls in data from the Police Department. … Continue reading »
Miss Ollie’s: Hits the spot for Caribbean soul food
Since her days at Oakland’s Hibiscus, and even further back at Front Porch in San Francisco, chef Sarah Kirnon has infused the Caribbean flavors of her youth into creative dishes exhibiting the heart of soul food with a modern vision. Kirnon’s fried chicken, a recipe she learned from her grandmother while growing up in Barbados, is a bit of a cult classic that follows her around from restaurant to restaurant.
Once Kirnon left Hibiscus, she put her efforts into opening Miss Ollie’s, which made its debut on Dec. 4. Named after, and in tribute to, her grandmother the restaurant occupies a roomy, corner location of Swan’s Market in Old Oakland. There a friendly crew serves lunch only, Tuesdays-Fridays, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. … Continue reading »

Shooting of bicyclist Pam Mullins in Berkeley not random
The shooting of 50-year-old Pam Mullins as she was riding her bike on Sacramento Street on Dec. 4 was a targeted attack and not a random killing, according to authorities.
Mullins was not the victim of a bullet gone astray, but someone who was intentionally targeted, said Officer Jennifer Coats, the police information officer.
Police declined to discuss why Mullins, an in-home health worker, might be the target of an attack. While she had lived in Berkeley for many years, she had moved into an apartment on Sacramento Street near Ward — about a block from the shooting — just a few weeks before her death, according to family members. … Continue reading »

November 27:
Series of indecent exposure incidents at University Village
The UC Berkeley-managed University Village office was notified on Nov 28, that a female resident was the victim of indecent exposure on Nov. 27 at about 4pm. The resident was walking up the exterior stairs to her apartment when a man asked her a question she could not understand. He repeated the question and when she turned around he exposed himself to her. The witness believes it is the same man who was going into apartments posing as a Village maintenance person in September. He is described as a white man. He looked about 50 years old. He wore a khaki (off white) cap and a khaki jacket, beige pants and had a leaflet or some pieces of paper in his hand. The previous victims have been all Asian females. … Continue reading »
