Berkeley’s long love-hate relationship with alcohol enters a new
round this week when the City Council reconsiders its
    drunken-driving policies.

The proposal, put forth by the Peace and Justice Commission,
urges the council to take a broad approach to the issue and not just
focus on increasing penalties, which unduly affect people of color and
    the poor, commissioners said.

    Driving under the influence of
alcohol “is a problem in Berkeley, absolutely,” said Peace and Justice
chair Noah Sochet. “But Berkeley is a vibrant city with a lot of
responsible, educated adults, and I think we can come up with a creative
    solution that’s more fair.”

I don’t know what was going on tonight, but at around 5pm there were 4-6 police cars near the Tuesday farmer’s market in berkeley/oakland border.

    Absolutely.

Did the P&J commission bother to consult with local alcohol policy expert Fried Wittman PhD, a member of the CA commission for alcohol policy or the nationally recognized prevention experts at The Prevention Research Center (PRC) of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation located on University Ave? The answer is NO, because they have all the knowledge they need and don’t use actual data or science to drive policy development.

call dispatch and ask. 981-5900, you have every right to be informed.

  • bingo

thanks. I didn’t know about that number at all. I was concerned as it was sirens blaring, doing 50mph outside the Ashby bart, etc. seemed most urgent.

    Seriously!

Council asked the P&J Commission to come back with more info and better data analysis about whether the DUI policy is really a problem.

Progressive traffic tickets, based on income, wealth, or car value, could have equal deterrent effect across the whole range of society.

  • bgal4

How logical. thanks Emilie, I did not listen to the meeting.

Maybe someone finally called the cops about the criminal prices they charge at the farmers markets in Berkeley.

DUI driving should be non-negotiable, lives are at stake.

Substance abuse needs consequences. This proposal sounds like enabling. And yes, lives are at stake.

Rimshot, are you Ira Serkes in disguise? :)
