Barkada Bakery and Café is now open at 4316 Telegraph Avenue in the heart of little Korea in Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood.
Co-owners are pastry chef Christina Bondoc and Rick Yarussi (chief coffee officer), and the emphasis is on top-quality baked goods, thoughtful sourcing and making as much as possible in-house — including its mustards, crème fraiche, dressings, and preserves.
On a visit today, Nosh toyed with ordering the seasonal quiche with organic egg, leek, fennel, garlic, and lemon thyme, but instead tried the Fifth Quarter corned beef pressed sandwich with Swiss, slaw, and house whole grain mustard. It was very tasty. The chunks of olive bread that were being offered to sample also went down a treat. Salads are also on the menu.
Vendors include Hayden Flour Mills, Community Grains, Giusto’s Organic Flours, The Fifth Quarter Charcuterie, The Compass Star, and Straus. Coffee is from Oakland’s Scarlet City Coffee Roasting.
No sign outside yet, but it’s the old Remedy coffee shop for those of you who knew that haunt.
