UC student assaulted by group on Grizzly Peak

UCPD badge The University of California Police Department is looking for a group of people who attacked a Cal student on Grizzly Peak Boulevard over the weekend.

On Sunday at 12:30 a.m., three males who had parked at signpost 16 were approached by a man who police said walked up to the victim and punched him in the face. Members of the assailant’s group then joined in on the attack.

“The victim fell to the ground and the suspect continued to punch and kick him. Other group members, both male and female, also began kicking and punching the victim,” police said in a prepared statement.

One of the victim’s friends tried to intervene, and was punched in the stomach. The victim managed to get up and run away but, as he was running, someone threw a bottle or a large rock at him, and struck him in the face.

The victim suffered multiple facial injures, police said, and was treated at Alta Bates Hospital.

Police searched the area but could not find the assailants. Two of the involved vehicles were described as a red Honda and a white Honda, or similar vehicles.

The initial assailant was described as a white male, 6 feet tall, with long blond curly hair and a light build. He was wearing a white shirt and hat. The other assailants were described only as white males and females in their 20s.

Earlier this year, 21-year-old Alverto Santana-Silva of Fremont was shot and killed in the same area on Grizzly Peak. Police said he tried to intervene in a dispute among strangers, and was shot as a result. No one has been arrested in that incident.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call UCPD’s Criminal Investigations Unit at 510-642-6760.

Same spot where Alverto Santana-Silva was killed in May.

What the hell is going on up there?

It’s obviously overdue for the police (whoever has jurisdiction there) to make much more frequent patrols in the area of that overlook, & hassle the groups of hoods gathering there ’til they feel harassed into hanging out someplace in Oakland.

Sympathetic thoughts and warmhearted prayers for the UC student.
