A Berkeley Police arrest earlier this month led to the seizure of 77 marijuana plants and the arrest of a probationer and alleged gang member.

According to Alameda County court documents, police stopped Omar Ramirez, 25, on Aug. 21 outside his home in the 2300 block of 10th Street in Berkeley after they identified him as on probation for a firearms charge that allowed police to search him.

He was standing next to a Chevy Impala, said police, in which officers found a loaded semi-automatic handgun. According to court documents, the gun was “sitting on top of the front right tire of the vehicle near which Ramirez had been standing.”

Police identified Ramirez in court documents as a “known gang member,” and two other men were arrested by officers at the same time in connection with gang activity, but both later were released.

During a probation search of Ramirez’s home, officers said they found receipts for rent paid to a second residence at 7800 Hillmont Drive in Oakland. There, police discovered a marijuana grow and recovered 77 marijuana plants, according to court documents.

Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded firearm in public, cultivating marijuana, participation in a criminal street gang, and probation violation.

According to the Alameda County district attorney’s office, Ramirez has been charged with six felony counts of cultivating marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, unlawful firearm activity, carrying a loaded and concealed firearm, and cutting a utility line.

Ramirez is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin with a bail of $70,000 and is scheduled for a preliminary examination hearing Sept. 27 at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in downtown Oakland.
