A man was hospitalized after walking into the roadway and being struck by a car in West Berkeley last week, authorities reported this week.

Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said police believe the man, a 54-year-old Berkeley resident, was likely at fault for the collision because he had “entered into the roadway in an area not designated for pedestrians when he was struck.” Police said alcohol may have been a factor on the pedestrian’s part.

The accident took place Sept. 18 just before 8:30 p.m. at Gilman Street and Eastshore Highway; a reader alerted Berkeleyside to the incident. He said he was driving west on Gilman that night when he saw many officers in the area, and was directed off the street because it was closed near the frontage road by Interstate 80.

Coats said the driver involved in the crash, a 34-year-old Albany woman, had been traveling eastbound on Gilman when she struck the man.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and was scheduled to be released this week. No further information was available about his condition.

Coats said the accident is currently under investigation by the Berkeley Traffic Bureau, but that initial reports had found the pedestrian to be at fault.
