On Saturday, Berkeley welcomed a new West Branch library at 1125 University Ave. (at San Pablo). Read all about it in our story published last week. And enjoy these superlative photographs by Richard Friedman, taken on opening day.

It was such a fun opening to attend — and great to see some of the familiar West Branch staff back together. The building is truly a jewel in our city.

Such a wonderful improvement over the old branch!

The light in the new library is a vast improvement over the old building. I liked the design overall. But while I’ll withhold final judgement, I suspect noise control will need to be tweaked over time. For some reason it sounded “sharp” while I was there on Saturday. May be it was just that it was crowded in a way that will not be typical on a normal day. I’m glad we have a library within comfortable walking distance again.
