Berkeley police investigating homicide on Addison Street

Berkeley Police officers are investigating what they say was the homicide of a man in his 50s in the 1100 block of Addison Street, near San Pablo Avenue, in West Berkeley.

On Friday, Feb. 28, at 11:46 a.m. police received a call for a welfare check at an apartment building in the 1100 block of Addison, authorities said in a statement released Saturday at 9:49 a.m. The 1100 block of Addison runs for two blocks, between San Pablo Avenue and Curtis Street.

Officers arrived at the home and found a man in his 50s who was dead.

The subsequent investigation determined his death to be a homicide.

The homicide is under investigation and the Berkeley Police Department is not releasing any further information at this point.

The case is the first homicide in Berkeley this year.

Update, 2:30 p.m. Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said via email that police cannot release the man’s name or cause of death, any information about who called in the welfare check or how the case was determined to be a homicide.

No information was available about when police will release the man’s name.


“Once more information is available I will release it,” she said. “Any further release so early in the investigation could jeopardize the case.”
