Berkeleyside, in collaboration with Mayor Tom Bates‘ office, is launching a photography contest through July to collect reader images from Sundays on Telegraph, which begins its second season this weekend.

The weekly street fair began in 2013 as a way to draw more families and visitors to Telegraph Avenue south of the UC Berkeley campus.

As described on the event’s website: “Telegraph Avenue becomes a car-free people zone stuffed full of musicians, dancers, artists, craftsmen, vendors and poets. People from all walks of life – locals, visitors, and students alike come out to enjoy the pleasant weather and festivities. Many UC Berkeley student groups participate in the fun and visitors get a chance to experience the breadth of culture Berkeley has to offer in the radius of a few blocks.”

The event runs Sundays from July 13 to Sept. 21, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Telegraph Avenue from Dwight Way north to Durant Avenue.

SundaysTelegraph_Poster_11x17_WithBleedsThis year, through July, Berkeleyside and the mayor’s office are putting on a photography contest to capture some of the event’s best moments. We invite attendees, throughout the month of July, to submit photographs of anything that captures the spirit of the event.

Prizes will be awarded in August in both adult and youth (17 and under) categories. Youth submissions must specify “youth” on their entries.

Photographs can be submitted until midnight July 31 either on Instagram, by using using the hashtag #SoTelegraph, or by posting or sharing publicly on the Sundays on Telegraph Facebook page (visit https://www.facebook.com/SoTelegraph). (Private messages cannot be considered.)

Adults will be eligible to win a pair of theater tickets; Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Aurora Theatre Company, the Shotgun Players and the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse are participating. Other cool prizes will be awarded to youth participants, according to the mayor’s office.

This Sunday for the kickoff, performers include a Dixieland jazz band called Spirit of 29, along with breakdancing and hip hop artists. From 1-4 p.m., Berkeley’s Boss Robot Hobby and Kids in Motion will have remote-controlled cars to race outside Moe’s Books.

Berkeleyside is a sponsor of Sundays on Telegraph.
