Ashby Avenue in Berkeley to close 2 nights for road work

construction_road_closed1234Ashby Avenue from Ninth Street to San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley will be closed Monday and Tuesday nights so Caltrans can remove old railroad tracks from the street, in addition to other work.

The stretch of Ashby, a state highway, will be closed to all traffic from 10 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19. It will be closed the same hours from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, according to a Caltrans statement.

Caltrans will also close one lane in each direction from Interstate 80 to San Pablo Avenue from Monday, Aug. 18, to Friday, Aug. 22. Those lanes will be unavailable to drivers from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Heavy traffic on Ashby during the day led to the nighttime scheduling, authorities said.

Caltrans suggests that motorists take Seventh Street to Heinz Avenue or Folger Avenue and continue to San Pablo Avenue.

In addition to taking out the old railroad tracks, Caltrans will grind off asphalt from the street, remove debris and repave Ashby. Officials expect the work to be noisy.

“Residents may hear backup alarms and notice increased noise while crews work through the area,” according to a prepared statement.

Repaving is expected to be done by Friday, Aug. 22, according to Caltrans officials. If there is still work to do, however, the contractor will return the following week to complete it.

The agency plans to send crews back approximately a week after the paving is finished to restripe the road with lane markings. When that happens, lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m.
