NEW 21ST AMENDMENT BREWERY OPENING SOON The East Bay beer boom continues. This week, 21st Amendment co-founders Nicco Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan snipped the ribbon on their new brewing facility in San Leandro. The massive, 95,000 square-foot facility was once a Kellogg’s factory. It is the brewery’s new world headquarters and, in time, will be a rollicking spot to grab a beer. While production has officially started at the new brewery, it won’t be open to the public until June 26. The public space will initially include a tasting room and outdoor beer garden. Eventually the owners plan on adding a restaurant, “floating” bars above the production facility, meeting spaces and an indoor amphitheater for events, beer classes and concerts. 21st Amendment joins long-established brewery Drake’s and new upstart Cleophus Quealy in the industrial west side of the city. But the neighbors to not plan on being competitors. “We’ll be experimenting with our San Leandro neighbors … to produce some really inventive collaboration beers,” said O’Sullivan. “We’re working to make San Leandro a craft beer mecca.” More than that, both O’Sullivan and Freccia hope to make their brewery a true neighborhood gathering spot. “It has been amazing to get to know San Leandro,” said Freccia. “We want to give back and become part of the fabric of the community.” 21st Amendment is at 2010 Williams St. (near West Gate Parkway), San Leandro. ELMWOOD’S THE ADVOCATE TO OPEN IN JULY As we reported earlier this week, contentious Elmwood restaurant The Advocate is slated to open in July. The name was chosen because it was also the name of Elmwood’s original newspaper, said co-owner John Paluska, who also owns downtown Berkeley’s Comal. It also seemed fitting for a restaurant in a city known for its activism. “It’s a tip of the hat to Berkeley,” he said. The name could also be seen as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the legal battle the owners had to fight to open the new eating spot. The Advocate will offer a menu of dishes inspired by southern Mediterranean and Moroccan/North African cooking, “all viewed through a Northern Californian lens,” according to the owners. Paluska and co-owner Andrew Hoffman have recruited John Griffiths to be the new restaurant’s executive chef. Griffiths was most recently at The Kitchen in Sacramento. The Advocate will be at 2635 Ashby Ave. (at College Avenue), Berkeley.

KITCHEN 388 CHANGES HANDS The popular Adam’s Point brunch restaurant Kitchen 388 abruptly closed at the end of May, but it won’t remain shuttered for long. According to Eater, former owner Joseph Dunbar sold the restaurant to San Francisco chef Philip Thoman, who also owns Nob Hill brunch spot Olea. Thoman told eater that he plans to keep the Kitchen 388 menu mostly the same, but will add a few Mexican-inspired dishes like huevos rancheros and migas. The actual kitchen will be run by chef Brian Brother, who had been working at Kitchen 388 before the sale. Thomas plans to re-open next Friday, June 19 for brunch. AJUZON STEAKHOUSE COMING TO OAKLAND WATERFRONT A steakhouse and sushi restaurant called Ajuzon should be opening any day now in Jack London Square. The restaurant has secured its ABC license and has put out a call for employees on Craigslist. Earlier this year, the East Bay Express reported on the restaurant, which is a venture of Korean chef WonBin Lim. Lim told EBX that Ajuzon will be at once a modern Japanese fusion restaurant and American-style steakhouse. On the Japanese side of the menu, Lim will offer house made tofu, kimchi and creative sushi dishes. The steakhouse offerings will be typical of the genre and “family-friendly,” Lim said. Ajuzon will be at 15 Embarcadero West (near Oak Street), Oakland.

SWEET BAR BAKERY ADDS BRUNCH Uptown’s Sweet Bar Bakery has turned its special Mother’s Day brunch into a regular affair. For now the menu, which includes egg bakes, breakfast pizza and French toast, is only offered on Sundays, but owner Mani Niall hopes to add weekday service soon. Also new at the bakery are donuts topped with the likes of a sour cherry and bourbon glaze or ancho-cocoa spice. CAKES AND PURLS TO CLOSE As reported in Shop Talk this week, Downtown Berkeley’s small batch bakery and knitting shop will close by the end of the month. Cakes and Purls was founded by Marie Sitaro in 2012 and offered New York-style pastries that Sitaro remembered eating as a child growing up in Brooklyn: thick, luscious cheesecakes, seven-layer cookies, and pignoli made with pine nuts. ‘The types of things you don’t see so much here,” she told Berkeleyside in 2012. She has recently had to retire from baking, and wrote on her website that although “it’s been an exciting adventure… the store is just not making it.” All yarn and knitting supplies are 25% off until the store closes its doors.

STANDARD FARE NOW DELIVERING LUNCH Fans of Kelsie Kerr’s cooking can now have it delivered for lunch, courtesy of meal delivery service Caviar. Standard Fare‘s lunch menu includes rotating green and mixed grain salads, a mezze plate, a seasonal soup, a few different sandwiches and coconut macaroon cookies. TWO EAST BAY FOOD ACTIVISTS GET JAMES BEARD NODS Berkeley’s Saru Jayaraman and Oakland’s Bryant Terry were both recipients of the James Beard Award Foundation’s Leadership Award this week. The award “recognizes specific outstanding initiatives as well as bodies of work and lifetime achievement,” according to the foundation’s website. Jayaraman was honored for her research and policy work to “create just workplace environments for all restaurant employees” at UC Berkeley’s Food Labor Research Center as well as the Restaurant Opportunity Centers United (ROC-United). Terry, who has written multiple cookbooks on vegan cooking including the recent Afro-Vegan, was given a nod for his “efforts to raise awareness of food-justice issues and to empower youth to be active in creating a healthy, just, and sustainable food system.” Both Jayaraman and Terry will be honored at ceremony Oct. 19 in New York City. Other award recipients include Don Bustos, a farmer and co-director of the American Friends Service Committee; Eliot Coleman, a farmer, author, agricultural researcher and educator; and Sam Kass, the former senior policy advisor for nutrition at the White House.

HOPSCOTCH TURNS THREE In celebration of its third anniversary Uptown’s Hopscotch is hosting a special dinner Thursday, June 18. The prix fixe menu is a re-creation of chef Kyle Itani‘s menu at the James Beard House in New York and includes dishes like coriander lamb tataki, cold-smoked hamachi, and olive oil poached black cod. Featured cocktails are also included. In addition to the special dinner, Hopscotch will serve daily $3 drink or food specials every night June 15-21 — think Asahi beer, Yonsei oyster, donuts and fried okra. Hopscotch is at 1915 San Pablo Ave., (at 19th Street), Oakland. VICTORY BURGER NOW SERVING BEER, WINE, SAKE Victory Burger fans can now enjoy their sustainable beef with a beer to drink. The North Oakland burger joint finally secured its beer and wine license and has added five rotating draft beers (including local breweries like Drake’s Brewing Company, Trumer Pils and Lagunitas Brewing Company), plus six local wines and sake-based seasonal aqua frescas to its menu. On weekends, Victory Burger will also pour Bloody Mary’s and mimosas. “We have quite the following for our popular farm-fresh burgers and seasonal ingredients. This weekend’s event, a pop-up pig roast co-hosted with Prickly Pig Barbecue, sounds particularly delicious. A ticket includes your choice of a pork sandwich, pork nachos, vegan Frito pie or a vegetarian sloppy joe, plus a Crooked City glass and a cider tasting. DALLA TERRA WINE TASTING AT LUNGOMARE The Napa-based Italian wine importer will be a guest at a special dinner at Chris Pastena‘s Lungomare Wednesday, June 24. The four-course menu will include Oregon shrimp with watermelon, fennel, watercress and mint; rabbit pate; local wild king salmon with fava beans and corn; and a berry-based dessert. POINT TO POINT RICHMOND FESTIVAL INCLUDES KALEIDOSCOPE COFFEE This weekend, Point Richmond will hold its semi-regular Point to Point festival. The event celebrates local visual and performance artists, and will include coffee and treats from Kaleidoscope Coffee, which we wrote about earlier this year. Owner Cassie Cushing will open her still-under-construction space for artists to showcase and sell their work, and will host a wrap-up event in the evening.
