Berkeley police are asking for the community’s help to identify a suspect who shot at a homeless man in downtown Berkeley in the early hours of April 14.

Nixle alert released by BPD on Tuesday at around 3 p.m. includes a video which shows the suspect aiming and firing a gun (see below).

Police said that Thursday at approximately 3:35 a.m. dispatch received a report of shots fired in the 2100 block of Kittredge Street. Once on scene, officers talked to what they describe as the intended target of the shooting, a 39-year-old homeless man, who was not hit or injured by the gunfire.

The man said he had been standing in front of 2165 Kittredge St. when the suspect, who was in the parking lot near the gas pumps of Touchless Car Wash at 2176 Kittredge, began shooting at him.

Police found a number of bullet impacts on the façade of 2165 Kittredge St. “From video surveillance and witness statements the suspect is described as a black or dark skinned male, 6’0′ to 6’03”, thin build, wearing a black t-shirt with a design on the front, chain around his neck, dark colored ‘bucket’ hat, tan pants, and white shoes,” states the Nixle alert.

After shooting the gun, the suspect fled south on Fulton Street and west on Bancroft Way, according to BPD. The suspect has not been identified and the weapon has not been found.

Police are also interested in talking to a pedestrian (above on the right) who is seen in the video walking past the car wash at the time of the shooting. Authorities would like to talk to this person about what he or she observed.

Police ask potential witnesses or those with information, such as the shooter’s identity, to call the department at 510-981-5741 or email police@cityofberkeley.info.
