UC Police report 2nd rape in student residence in 5 days

UCPD badgeUC Police sent out an alert Wednesday afternoon that they had received a report on Monday, Sept. 19 about the rape of a female student that happened on Saturday, Sept. 10 in a UC Berkeley residential hall.

No further details were made available. UCPD’s Criminal Investigation Bureau is investigating the crime.

There have been several reported rapes and sexual assaults of female UC Berkeley students since Cal started its new semester.

A rape was also reported to have happened the night after the latest one, also at a Cal residence hall. UCPD sent out the alert about that one on Sept. 15. The victim, a 19-year-old female student, was allegedly raped on Sunday Sept. 11 by a male acquaintance who was also a student and a resident of campus housing, UCPD said.

Two Cal students also reported being victims of sexual assault at Berkeley’s Greek Theatre on Saturday Sept. 10. A total of three sexual assaults were reported at Diplo’s ‘Mad Decent Block Party.

UCPD issued safety tips and reminders on Wednesday to the campus community. They stated that “rape and sexual assault are never the fault of the survivor. It is the behavior of the perpetrator that is wrong; “80% of sexual assault and rapes are perpetrated by someone known to the survivor, and on college campuses 90% of survivors know their attacker.” In addition, they wrote: “sexual assault is a felony in the state of CA. Sentencing can include up to 10 years in prison, fines, registration as a sex offender and expulsion from the University.”
