Hollywood comes to Berkeley for TV show, again

It isn’t only the people behind NBC series Parenthood who feel Berkeley is a choice spot to shoot a TV series. Yesterday, the Elmwood neighborhood paid host to a film crew shooting scenes for Hacienda Heights, a night-time drama (not a soap opera, one of the crew insisted) which takes its cues from the popular Latino telenovela format.

Local fashion design store Keneuoe Vivere was the focus of the action, as scenes were shot throughout the afternoon and evening. The … Continue reading »

“Parenthood” works to up the Berkeley content

Parenthood shoot

Bob Patterson yesterday came across a second unit film crew from Parenthood doing some shooting on Telegraph Avenue. Many locals have criticized the NBC series both for filming in Southern California and for representing a decidedly faux Berkeley.

I wouldn’t count on a major change, but it’s nice that they’ll be interleaving some more footage of the real Berkeley in the coming second series.

Berkeley couple at heart of Prop 8 case speak out

After a federal judge ruled that Prop 8 was unconstitutional on Wednesday, Kris Perry and Sandy Stier of Berkeley, the two women who brought the case, spoke out at a press conference in San Francisco.

One poignant thought from Perry: “For so long, Sandy and I and our family have been regarded as less than, unequal, not worthy of the pursuit of happiness under the law. This decision says that we are Americans, too. We, too, should be treated … Continue reading »

Why isn’t more of NBC’s Parenthood filmed in Berkeley?

The cast of Parenthood

Every since NBC debuted its hour-long drama, Parenthood, people in Berkeley have pointed out all the ways it’s not, well, Berkeley.

Complaints are many. There are too many white characters, and not enough people of color. No one is gay. There are too few Priuses in the show, and not nearly enough Peet’s Coffees. That high school in the series looks nothing like Berkeley High. And how in the world can the parents afford that sprawling Craftsman-style house that … Continue reading »

In a partnership just announced by YouTube, the students now will also be recording video of news events that will be uploaded to CitizenTube, a new news site.

YouTube will also be funneling other breaking news video to the site, by both professional and citizen journalists. The idea is to locate all … Continue reading »

“Parenthood”: Might Berkeleyside get a look-in?

SF Register Parenthood
Print Friendly

I realize Parenthood has largely abandoned any attempts at credibility where its supposed Berkeley location is concerned. But how hard can it be for a production crew to get a copy of a real Bay Area newspaper on the set?

On this week’s episode, character Adam  is seen — very briefly — scanning the front page of his local paper with his morning coffee (before he greets his morose teenage daughter, Haddie, who has just broken up … Continue reading »

How Berkeley can you be on TV?

Parenting prevented me from attending the Parenthood premiere bash held in — oops — Oakland not Berkeley.

So instead of viewing the pilot with local luminaries at the beautifully restored Fox Theater in downtown Oaktown, I watched the start of the series from the comfort of my couch in a modest west Berkeley cottage.

Berkeleyside readers will have read here that Oakland, not Berkeley, was the original setting for NBC’s new prime time … Continue reading »
