Oxford Elementary School celebrates 100th birthday

Oxford Elementary School is not letting its 100th birthday go by unnoticed. Two big celebratory events have been planned this weekend to mark the occasion — and all current families, alumni, teachers, and former teachers are invited.

First up, a Harvest Faire will be held on Saturday October 16, from 11am to 3pm. This is Oxford School’s annual carnival and book sale with a food booth, games and prizes, and this year will include a special centennial commemoration.

Former Defense Secretary to guest at film screening

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry will be the featured guest at a screening of the documentary The Nuclear Tipping Point at UC Berkeley on the afternoon of Thursday October 14.

The documentary, released earlier this year, centers on conversations with four men intimately involved in American diplomacy and national security over the last 40 years: Perry, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and Sam Nunn, a former U.S. senator.

Wishes come true for Berkeley public school teachers

Last month a lot of teachers in California woke up to a good day. You may have read about it in the Chronicle — one immensely good Samaritan decided to write a very fat check and convert teacher wish-lists into reality.

Awards honor Berkeley contributors and students

Ilene Abrams, Berkeley High School’s former college counselor will be honored next month for her contribution to the community — and specifically to the students she helped coach into colleges all over the country. Abrams was also instrumental in helping set up a program of four-year scholarships and mentoring support for Berkeley High graduates of promise orchestrated by the Berkeley Community Fund (BCF).

BBC checks out Memorial Stadium fault — by chopper

A couple of weeks ago — darn, how did we miss this? — the BBC touched down by helicopter at California Memorial Stadium to film a segment for the show Naked Earth BBC series Naked Earth, which is likely to be renamed when it broadcasts in the US to avoid confusion with a National Geographic series.
