The Freedom Buses, with student designs, ready to roll

Freedom Bus rendering - side

An AC Transit bus wrapped in artwork commemorating the civil rights movement, created by Berkeley High School Arts and Humanities Academy students, will go on display on March 25 to the public.

The bus is part of the Freedom Bus Project, a joint effort by the Alameda County Office of Education and AC Transit, in conjunction with West Contra Costa Unified School District and Art IS Education. The project honors the 55th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ historic bus ride in Montgomery, Alabama. Project co-chair and AC Transit Board Director, Joel Young, said: “There is a gap in education when it comes to teaching civil rights, and our goal is to bridge that gap by integrating civil rights and the arts.” … Continue reading »

AC Transit proposals cut nine Berkeley services

AC Transit services

AC Transit faces unbudgeted expenditures of over $17 million following an August 2nd court injunction suspending management-imposed new labor rules. The AC Transit District had imposed the new contract to achieve annual savings of $15.7 million. The court injunction also delayed proposed cuts this fall, accounting for a further $1.9 million in unexpected costs.

To bridge the gap, the district’s board tomorrow night is considering a swingeing set of cuts to be enacted in December. Weekend services on … Continue reading »

AC Transit riders stymied by “sickout”

AC Transit bus

Since Monday, riders of AC Transit buses have experienced reduced or cancelled services. According to AC Transit, the problem is an unofficial “sickout” by drivers, protesting a new contract that went into effect on Sunday. According to the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 192, there is no sickout and their drivers are reporting for work.

AC Transit’s Clarence Johnson, manager of media affairs, told Berkeleyside that 133 of 1,750 employees did not report for work today. He … Continue reading »

Council approaches BRT “study” decision

FMG Architects

Alan Tobey, a citizen of Berkeley since 1970, has been closely following the plans for Bus Rapid Transit in Berkeley. He reports on the latest developments:

In 2001, the Berkeley City Council unanimously approved its choice for an AC Transit “major improvement” project: Bus Rapid Transit on Telegraph Avenue and on into Downtown. Only nine years later, the Council will soon choose the details of what may actually be built.

Bus Rapid Transit is said to improve service by … Continue reading »

AC Transit’s 51 bus: an open letter

51

To:  The AC Transit Board of Directors

From: John Seal, Oakland

I am writing again to express my displeasure with AC Transit’s decision to discontinue the 51 Line.

Upon reviewing the Revised Service Adjustments Plan released to the public on November 18, I find the section concerning the 51 most discouraging and not terribly enlightening. The Plan emphasizes that this is the most heavily used and most productive line in the system, but then refers to “crippling on-time performance … Continue reading »
