Berkeley buildings are winners in architecture awards
The San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects recently announced the winners of its 2012 Design Awards, and four Berkeley projects were awarded in the progam, from a total of 26 across the Bay Area.
Mark Cavagnero Associates won a Merit Award in the Interior Architecture category for their renovation of UC Berkeley’s Durant Hall. Leger Wanaselja Architecture received a Merit award in the Energy and Sustainability category for the partners’ own home, the McGee Salvage House on McGee Street in central Berkeley. In the same category, Noll & Tam Architects won a citation award for the YMCA-PG&E Teen Center in downtown Berkeley. And Diller Scofidio + Renfro/EHDD Architecture received a Merit award in the Unbuilt Design category for their designs for the forthcoming Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive.
John King, Urban Design Critic at the San Francisco Chronicle said Berkeley did particularly well this year. “This is a large number for Berkeley.” But he cautions that this doesn’t necessarily mean an affirmation of shifting Berkeley design trends. … Continue reading »
View from the water: New span of Bay Bridge takes shape
Short of a stroll on the structure itself, the best way to get up close to the new east span of the Bay Bridge is to take to the water. Berkeleyside recently joined a boat tour organized by the American Institute of Architects to get a unique view of the construction progress to date.
The tour was led by Donald MacDonald, principal at Donald MacDonald Architects, who provided design services for the new bridge, working with New York bridge engineering firm Weidlinger Associates; Jeffrey Heller, principal at architects Heller Manus; and Jordona Jackson of San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Projects. Five Berkeley homes featured on new architecture tour
This year, the American Institute of Architects is launching an East Bay Home Tour to complement those it already organizes in San Francisco and Marin. The new tour, which takes place on August 13, features eight distinctive homes, five of which are in Berkeley — a sign, perhaps, that the city is alive and kicking with creative energy in the field of architecture.
All the homes on the tour — the three outside Berkeley are in Oakland, Lafayette and Orinda — share key characteristics: sustainability, open floor plans, connection of indoors to outdoors, abundant light and a mix of modern and traditional materials.
The five Berkeley homes — two of them the creations of Berkeley architects – each boast interesting stories of their own.
The “DIY House” was designed by Berkeley architect Endres Ware to be built by the owner, who had no prior construction experience. The result, a clever, energy efficient box, was built for just $175,000. … Continue reading »
