Panel to discuss whether abstract art refutes digital age
The Berkeley Art Center is celebrating the centennial of abstract painting with an exhibit curated by Peter Selz, one of the founders of the Berkeley Art Museum and an expert in German Expressionism.
On Saturday at 4 p.m., Selz will moderate a panel with several of the artists featured in Abstract Visions, including Gary Edward Blum, Donna Brookman, Bruce Hasson, Kevan Jenson, Naomie Kremer, Keiko Nelson, and Gloria Tanchelev. After the panel, each of the artists will … Continue reading »
Summer movie series launches in downtown Berkeley: Vote for the films you want to see
Today sees the launch of “Center Street Summer Cinema” — free screenings of movies under the stars in downtown Berkeley on four consecutive Saturdays in August. Berkeleyside is proud to be the lead media sponsor of this exciting new addition to the Berkeley summer calendar.
Center Street will be the place to be on the evenings of August 6, 13, 20 and 27. At least 15 local restaurants — including Alborz Persian Restaurant and Sportivo – will serve café-style specials on or near the street, which will be closed to traffic between Shattuck and Oxford starting at 6:30pm.
Movie-goers can come early to dine al fresco while being entertained by performers from the Downtown Berkeley MusicFest. Other fun activities being planned for the events — which are being orchestrated by the Downtown Berkeley Association — include cartoons, short features, face painting, all of which will precede the main movie screenings. … Continue reading »

Berkeley’s future art museum already a magnet for art
A certain white wall on Center Street is clearly proving very inviting for street artists on the hunt for a fresh canvas.
The building on the corner of Center and Oxford, which will one day house the Berkeley Art Museum after it moves from its seismically unsafe home on Bancroft Way, has been used by a number of artists of late.
On Monday, two college students from out of town were carefully gluing black paper cutouts of butterflies … Continue reading »
UC Berkeley stands by pledge to fund art museum
The Chronicle’s Matier & Ross column today leads with a story about UC Berkeley pledging to spend up to $20 million on its new art museum, despite being financially strapped to the extent it has been forced to raise tuition fees by 8% next fall.
This is not news, as UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor Frank Yeary told the UC Regents last spring that the university was prepared to kick in as much as $20 million if donations to help … Continue reading »

Berkeley Art Museum selects architects for new home
The Berkeley Art Museum-Pacific Film Archive has chosen New York architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro to design its new building in downtown Berkeley. The announcement follows a nationwide search which saw ten architecture firms considered for the project.
DS+R is tasked with transforming the former University of California printing plant at Center and Oxford streets in downtown Berkeley for BAM/PFA, after the museum decided to abandon plans to create a building from scratch. In 2006, the … Continue reading »
Be puzzled by The Residents tonight at BAM
The Residents are performing in the Berkeley Art Museum’s L@TE program tonight at 7:30 p.m. If you know who The Residents are, the rest of this post is superfluous. If you don’t, read on.
Here’s how The Resident’s FAQ tries to explain things:
1. Are The Residents a band, or what?
A. I guess I would have to say a “what.” The Residents write, record and perform music, so I suppose that kind … Continue reading »

Berkeley Art Museum seeks architect, again
Following its decision to move into the former University of California printing plant at Center and Oxford streets in downtown Berkeley (pictured top right), the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive is looking for an architecture firm to revamp the space for them.
According to John King in today’s Chronicle, ten architectural firms have submitted initial proposals and the museum hopes to narrow the list to three and name its designer in June.

A L@te start to the weekend
If the aim of Berkeley Art Museum’s L@te Friday night events is to generate some buzz, the museum has succeeded. Last night’s event had the energy of a good cocktail party, which seemed to be picking up steam at 8:30. (I bet they had to shoo people out at the 9 p.m. closing — I can picture the event hosts yawning, collecting glasses, bringing out coats. …)
The crowd of 200 or so, including some … Continue reading »
