Tuesday afternoon, police arrested a man and recovered a stolen vehicle in North Berkeley, and the activity left many parents wanting to know more about the incident, which was near Cragmont Elementary School, at Spruce Street and Marin Avenue.
One parent posed the question to Berkeleyside, noting at about 4 p.m. that “the area around Cragmont School/Marin/Euclid was crawling with police (cars, marked and un-, motorcycle, crime unit van) about an hour ago. I live near Easter Steps on Cragmont and there were many clustered at entrances there. I counted at least a dozen units of various types. No sirens or helicopters. Be good to know what went down.” … Continue reading »

Op-Ed: False alarms take up valuable Berkeley police time
More than 6,000 police dispatches are made annually to homes and business when sensors are tripped sending signals to alarm monitoring companies who dial 911 reporting an intrusion to the police. In general, the vast majority of these types of alerts, a percentage as high as 98% according to the U.S. Department of Justice, are false alarms. In an Opinionator piece published this morning on Berkeleyside, Pat Mapps and James Barter argue that Berkeley police resources would be better deployed on … Continue reading »

…Or How to Add More Police Officers Without Additional Cost
It’s a late Friday night as the Berkeley police officer patrolling Beat 12 on the swing-shift rolls south on Russell looking for activity at Grove Park after closing time. While slowly sweeping the baseball field with his floodlight, his radio crackles a code 21A on the 2600 block of Sacramento; a silent burglar alarm – burglary in progress. The officer slams on the accelerator lifting the hood of the car … Continue reading »

Berkeley Police detectives were able to track down a parolee who police say tried to rob a woman at knife-point earlier this week after a witness took a photograph of the man’s license plate when he fled the scene, authorities said Friday.

A man with a knife came up to her and tried to rob her. She screamed and he ran to a parked vehicle and drove off. … Continue reading »
Police recognize retirement, celebrate promotions
More than 100 people crowded into the Maudelle Shirek building in downtown Berkeley on Thursday morning to celebrate three promotions and recognize the retirement of a longtime officer from the Berkeley Police Department.
Opening these ceremonies to the public is a relatively new move by the department to give the community a chance to learn about how officers approach their work, said Police Chief Michael Meehan.
“It’s something I changed when I got hired,” said Meehan. “We’re proud of who we are and what we’re doing in this city, and we want people to know who their officers are.” … Continue reading »

The men fled, but police say officers caught up with them early Sunday during a traffic stop. All three were arrested on suspicion of robbery.
If it seems like this story, or at least the first part of it, has become all too common this year, that’s because robberies are up a whopping 25% when compared to the same period last year, police said Wednesday. … Continue reading »

Police watch for violence at funeral for 19-year-old
Berkeley police were out in force Thursday for the funeral of Ceejay Reed, 19, at McGee Avenue Baptist Church in South Berkeley.
The police established a visible presence on McGee and Stuart Street around 11 a.m. in an effort to deter a repeat of a shooting Tuesday night in East Oakland during a street vigil for Reed. On that occasion, a car driving by a group of people mourning Reed in the 5000 block of Melrose Avenue fired 20 to 30 bullets, one of which killed a 19-year-old Antioch man.
