The body of a man was discovered by a hiker in Tilden Park on Friday, September 7 at around 8 a.m. There was a gunshot wound to the man’s head and the East Bay Regional Parks public safety department said they believe it was a death by suicide. The body was found near the Orchard Picnic Area off Brook Road, south of the Tilden Park Merry Go-Around. The case is under investigation and awaiting a coroner’s report, according to an EBRP spokesperson.
The fatal shooting of UC Berkeley student Christopher Travis was likely to have been “suicide by police”, according to Richard Lyons, dean of the Haas School of Business, where the shooting took place on November 15.
Update, 4:15 p.m. According to Jim Allison, deputy chief communications director at BART, the fatality at Ashby BART station was in all likelihood a suicide. “Everything the BART police told me points to a suicide,” he told Berkeleyside. “Witnesses said a woman was on the trackway at the end of the station and she didn’t do anything to get out of the way of the northbound train as it entered the station.”
The Alameda County coroner’s office has identified the man who fatally shot himself after an overnight standoff on Marin Avenue Monday. He was 58-year-old Owen Davis.
