BRT full-build rejected by city council

At last night’s special meeting, the City Council decided to pass the so-called reduced-impact plan and the no-build option forward for study. The full-build option, which had been revised by city staff, was not passed for study. The reduced-impact plan would involve no dedicated bus lanes on Telegraph and Shattuck.

Last night’s decision was not to build or stop BRT; it was merely to decide which schemes went forward for final environmental impact review and study.

City votes yes on Center Street, delays BRT decision

At last night’s marathon City Council meeting (which ended well past midnight), Berkeley City council members voted 8 to 1 to approve the Strawberry Creek Plaza plan for Center Street (pictured above). The vote gives the go-ahead for money to be raised to implement the designs, which were commissioned from landscape designer Walter Hood.

Council approaches BRT “study” decision

Alan Tobey, a citizen of Berkeley since 1970, has been closely following the plans for Bus Rapid Transit in Berkeley. He reports on the latest developments:

In 2001, the Berkeley City Council unanimously approved its choice for an AC Transit “major improvement” project: Bus Rapid Transit on Telegraph Avenue and on into Downtown. Only nine years later, the Council will soon choose the details of what may actually be built.
