Berkeley High staffer injured, 15 students suspended, due to 500-strong student mob involving bullying, drinking

A Berkeley High staffer was sent to the hospital Friday with a head injury sustained during what the school describes as a mob scene involving an estimated 500 students “participating in hazing and bullying behavior,” chanting and throwing objects, including glass bottles.

Berkeley police were called to help BHS administration and safety staff control the crowd of mostly juniors and seniors that gathered on the campus quad at around 3:45 p.m. While trying to break up the mob, two additional staff members were hit, according to Jorge Melgoza, vice principal of Berkeley High, who sent an email to the school community about the incident that was delivered on Saturday.

Fifteen students were found to be intoxicated and were suspended Friday. None were injured and no arrests were made. … Continue reading »

Update, 6:45 a.m. Power has been restored to most of the buildings on campus and most classes will meet as scheduled. But 11 buildings remain closed, including Doe Library, the Bancroft Library, California Hall, Durant Hall, Dwinelle Hall and annex, and Edwards track. Classes at those buildings will be cancelled. Live blog: Cal explosion sends 1 to hospital, clears campus

Update, 11:59 p.m. During UC Berkeley’s evacuation Monday due to a power outage and the explosion that followed, members of Cal’s amateur radio club remained nearby to help spread the word about the developing situation to emergency workers and ham radio operators throughout the area.

Jack Burris (amateur radio call-sign “K6JEB”) works as an IT manager for UC Berkeley’s social sciences Data Lab and is president of the radio club. He said he and another club member, Joel Martin (call-sign “KQ1N”), had attended the 9 p.m. university press conference and broadcast it on their radios to other ham operators, who had fanned out to area fire departments after receiving an informal alert about the emergency. … Continue reading »

Three arrested after robbery with gun near UC Berkeley

Update, 5:14 p.m. The Berkeley Police Department identified those arrested in connection with Thursday morning’s robbery as James Heater, 24, of Oakland; Stefon Simpkins, 21; and Bart Perrin, 22, of San Ramon. No city of residence was listed for Simpkins.

Original story, 4:25 p.m. Authorities arrested three young men they say are responsible for an early morning robbery with a gun near the University of California, Berkeley, campus on Thursday.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon by the University of California Police Department, police said a 19-year-old was walking near Warring Street and Channing Way just after 1:30 a.m. when two young men approached him.

Campus police at the University of California, Berkeley, have arrested one man, and are seeking another, in connection with several instances of graffiti found Saturday, authorities said.

According to police, “This crime is classified as a hate crime because while documenting the scene the officers noted derogatory graffiti towards sexual orientation.”

Saturday night at about 10:30, the University of California Police Department received a report of two males who were spray painting graffiti at the Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. The center, on Oxford Street near Hearst Avenue, opened this semester after its dedication in October. … Continue reading »

Juveniles in custody after fights outside Berkeley High

Four juveniles were taken into custody on suspicion of fighting outside Berkeley High School on Wednesday afternoon.

Large crowds of students and passers-by gathered near the intersection of Bancroft Way and Milvia Street shortly after students were leaving the campus at the end of the school day to watch the fights, according to Officer Jennifer Coats at the Berkeley Police Department.

Many Berkeley police officers were dispatched to the area after receiving calls from the public, starting at 3:41 p.m, and they worked to disperse the large groups of onlookers. Officers were able to disperse the crowds, and they took four juveniles into custody in connection with the fighting, Coats said. … Continue reading »
