Sunday, June 16, Robbery: The victim was walking at 7 p.m. near University Avenue and Bonar Street when someone approached from behind and forcibly “removed the victim’s cell phone from his grasp,” then fled. April 20, Saturday: Police arrested Keith Whittaker, 46, after responding to the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way for a report of a male and female fighting. Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said, via email in response to a Berkeleyside request, that police who responded to the call spoke with Whittaker as well as a 29-year-old Berkeley woman. Coats said the man and woman, who had previously been involved in a relationship, had gotten into an “argument that escalated into a physical altercation, with the suspect striking the victim.” During the incident, police said Whittaker took money from the victim, who suffered a non-life-threatening injury when he struck her. Whittaker was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence battery, robbery, grand theft from a person, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. He remains in custody in Santa Rita Jail with a hearing set for May 9, according to the Alameda County sheriff’s department. … Continue reading »

Sunday, April 14: A male was walking near Prince and King streets at 4:30 a.m. when another male ran up and punched him. The robber continued to batter the victim and also demanded his cell phone, which the victim turned over. The suspect fled the area. The robber is described as Asian or Samoan, 17 to 18 years old, and 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

Monday, April 15: Someone threw a bottle through the front window of an apartment, damaging the window, in the 2500 block of Hillegass Avenue just before 10 p.m.

Tuesday, April 16: A caller reported hearing possibly 30 loud reports near Oregon and Sacramento streets at 12:30 a.m. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate any victims or damaged property.  … Continue reading »

March 17, Sunday: A woman made a report to police at 8 a.m. that her bicycle had been stolen from the rear yard of her residence in the 2600 block of Ashby Avenue. Taken was a light blue Giant Cypress bicycle with wicker baskets and a brown seat.

March 18, Monday: A robbery occurred at 10:05 p.m. in the 1900 block of Russell Street. A woman was walking home when a stranger grabbed her from behind and took her bag, pulling her to the ground. The robber stole the bag, which held a cell phone, wallet and other items. The robber was described as a black man, 25 years old, 6 feet 2 inches tall with a skinny build, and wearing a black baseball hat, black tank top and black pants.  … Continue reading »

March 10, Sunday: At approximately 3 p.m., the victim went out to her vehicle in the 2700 block of Fulton Street and discovered a window had been broken. A thief had stolen a flute and a computer bag containing documents from the car.

March 11, Monday: A robbery occurred in the 3300 block of Adeline Street at 11:50 p.m. The male victim was walking when he was approached by two strangers. One of the men, who was armed with a gun, struck the victim with the gun and caused minor injuries. The men stole the victim’s cell phone, backpack and wallet. Both robbers were described as black men ages 25 to 30 years old. One was about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a skinny or medium build, medium-length hair and light facial hair; he was wearing a dark puffy jacket. On Wednesday, the University of California Police Department also issued an alert about three recent armed and strong-arm robberies that occurred near campus.
