A 24-year old Berkeley alum who raised funds for start-ups while still in school announced Monday that he has started a $6 million fund for companies connected to UC Berkeley.
The hot ticket in downtown Berkeley on the evening of Thursday Jan. 28 was arguably the gala opening party for the new BAMPFA, but if you had seen the several-hundred strong line of people snaking down Center Street and round the corner along Shattuck between 5 and 7 p.m., waiting to get into the NextSpace building, you’d have been forgiven for thinking there was an even hotter event going on.
WeWork, which has been called the country’s leading co-working company and is expanding globally at a rapid rate, according to the business press, has opened in downtown Berkeley.
BERKELEY DINE OUT Berkeley schools district-wide incorporate gardening and cooking into the curriculum. The idea is that the school gardens produce healthy habits and interdisciplinary lessons, along with the fruits and vegetables. But the program has lost federal funding and needs help. To support the garden-based learning program at 16 BUSD campuses, participate in Dine Out on Thursday, Nov. 13. PG&E fixed a power outage that affected around 1,900 customers around 2 a.m. — only to find that the fix malfunctioned and caused “momentaries” in downtown Berkeley around 10:45 a.m.
Berkeleyside will be holding Open Office hours on Thursday May 29, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at NextSpace in downtown Berkeley.
CVS PHARMACY The CVS pharmacy that has been under construction at 2565 Telegraph Ave., the site of an old Andronico’s, opened its doors over the weekend. The 26,455-square-foot space carries a wide variety of goods including beauty supplies, seasonal items, household goods, alcohol and a huge selection of drinks. The chain will officially launch the store on Saturday, June 1, with a celebration event. This is the third CVS pharmacy in Berkeley. The chain is locked in a head-to-head battle with Walgreens.
