HOT TO TROT Hot sandwich restaurant Toaster Oven is crossing the bridge to the East Bay and opening soon on Telegraph Avenue. The chain, which has three locations in San Francisco, serves meat and vegetarian grilled sandwiches, as well as breakfast sandwiches, shakes and cookies. Toaster Oven Berkeley will be at 2309 Telegraph, right next to Chipotle.

After three years of planning, Peet’s on Solano has put chairs and tables outside its store on Solano Avenue, helping to create a European-style ambiance for the block.

It took the company that long because of Berkeley’s labyrinth permit process – and the fact not everyone agrees that outside seating is a good thing.

How Berkeley can you be on TV?

Parenting prevented me from attending the Parenthood premiere bash held in — oops — Oakland not Berkeley.

So instead of viewing the pilot with local luminaries at the beautifully restored Fox Theater in downtown Oaktown, I watched the start of the series from the comfort of my couch in a modest west Berkeley cottage.

Does Peet’s sell day-old pastries? The owner of the Bread Garden thinks so

In an attempt to increase his business, the owner of the Bread Garden Bakery on Domingo Avenue has put a sign in his store window alerting people that Peet’s Coffee, his next-door neighbor, is selling day-old pastries.

David Morris put up the sign on Tuesday February 23 as a way to lure customers to buy their pastries from his store, rather than Peet’s.
