PAL’S FINDS HOME AT FORAGE KITCHEN, OPENING AUG. 29 That didn’t take long. Jeff Mason of Pal’s Takeaway has announced that he will be among the first chefs at Oakland’s Forage Kitchen, which is set to open Aug. 29. In addition to leasing kitchen space in the building, Mason will be the first resident chef in Forage Kitchen’s café. He will serve his menu of creative sandwiches and will be collaborating with Forage Kitchen owner Iso Rabins on rotisserie offerings and “other items,” according to a statement released by Forage Kitchen. While Forage Kitchen has said that the café residency is temporary, an article published this week in the San Francisco Chronicle implied that Pal’s may stick around for awhile. We’ve reached out to Mason for more details and will update this post as we learn more. As far as the rest of the Forage Kitchen space goes, Rabins hopes for the building to serve as a resource and incubator for chefs and home cooking enthusiasts to work side-by-side. Office space will also be available for tenants; according to the Chronicle piece, Oakland’s Food Craft Institute is moving in to take advantage of this mixed-use capability. This move is also in alignment with FCI’s mission to provide entrepreneurial education for food makers. “Increasing the accessibility and effectiveness of resources for our local food businesses is our top priority and we are thrilled to be part of this exciting ecosystem of vibrant enterprises,” said FCI director Ally DeArman in a statement. CHOLITA LINDA OPENING NEW LOCATION IN GRAND LAKE Temescal’s popular taco and Latin comfort food joint Cholita Linda is expanding, we hear from the Splashpad Park Facebook page. The new location, at 3256 Lakeshore Ave., will take the place of The Burrito Shop, which closed last September. Cholita Linda got its start as a food stand at the Jack London Square farmers market in 2008; it opened its first brick-and-mortar location in February 2014. The restaurant’s fish tacos are especially popular, and they were named the best in the Bay Area by San Francisco Magazine in 2014. Other items on its menu include pan-Latin dishes like Cubano sandwiches, chicharron de Pollo plates and coconut pudding desserts. PERDITION SMOKEHOUSE CLOSES SUDDENLY We were surprised to hear that Berkeley’s Perdition Smokehouse shuttered suddenly this week. While the barbecue itself wasn’t particularly memorable, Perdition did have one of the best tap lists around and an excellent outdoor patio on which to drink them. The East Bay Express had the scoop, but didn’t have many details on the reason for the closure. EBX speculated that the closure was likely tied to former chef Mike O’Brien’s decision to leave the company, which also includes The Trappist, The Trappist Provisions, and Mikkeler Bar in San Francisco, earlier this month. (O’Brien was the chef at both Perdition and Mikkeler.) A source close to the company also speculates that this split was the source of financial strain for the company, enough that it caused the restaurant to close. We have reached out to owner Chuck Stilphen, as well as O’Brien, but have yet to receive any comments on the closure. One thing I never could understand about the extremely popular Ramen Shop in Rockridge is why it never sold food in its large front bar. Instead, the space was often where crowds dwelled (with some well-balanced drinks in hand) while waiting for a table.
Now, because of opportunity and the desire to reduce the wait times for diners at this no-reservations Oakland hot spot, in August Ramen Shop expanded into a former luggage shop next door, creating another bar area serving bar snacks and adding tables to the existing bar where you can now order the full menu. … Continue reading »
VEGAN BUTCHER SHOP LIKELY HEADED TO UNIVERSITY The Butcher’s Son, the vegan butcher shop and deli that originally planned on opening on Solano Avenue, is now very close to securing a new location on University Avenue. Owner Peter Fikaris confirmed that he and his sister, and co-owner Christina Stobing, have already negotiated a lease for the shop’s new location, in what is currently the Greek restaurant Athineon at 1914A University Ave. Fikaris and Stobing have applied for a liquor license for the space, and they will likely be able to get the keys to the restaurant once the license transfer is complete. This newest iteration of The Butcher’s Son will be “less bakery” and “more deli,” said Fikaris, and will include dinner service once the deli is up and running. Fikaris describes the future restaurant as an “old Italian spaghetti and meatball place with a selection of different pasta and pizza dishes” — all vegan, of course. On the deli side, The Butcher’s Son will offer vegan meats, cheeses, salads and sides, plus a selection of bagels, sandwiches, pastries and desserts. Everything will be made in-house. OVO COMES TO NORTH OAKLAND OVO, a.k.a. “Oakland’s Very Own Tavern and Eatery,” has softly opened on Martin Luther King Jr. Way in North Oakland. The new bar and restaurant is an official viewing spot for the Golden State Warriors playoff games while it continues to tweak its menu and operating hours. For now, OVO is open only from 4-9 p.m.; owner DeWayne DeGuzman aims to hold a grand opening party at the end of the month. The menu features simple bar food like tater tots, chicken wings and burgers. DeGuzman said OVO will eventually be open in the morning, with breakfast pastries from Gregory’s Gourmet Desserts and Mr. Espresso coffee. The bar has a modest selection of beers, with space for six rotating local microbrews, and a potent-sounding OVO punch (think rum and lots of fruit). OVO takes the place of Bottom of the Ninth Bar & Grill, which opened in 2013 after Looney’s BBQ closed. DeGuzman hopes the restaurant will be a lively community gathering space, and he plans on keeping the concept and menu adaptable to the changing neighborhood. “We’re going to keep it fresh, just like Oakland,” he said. Michael Bauer’s list of the top 100 Bay Area restaurants causes a stir each spring. The San Francisco Chronicle food critic has been producing the compilation of his favorite spots for the past 20 years. His choices are typically San Francisco-heavy, but they do include a growing number — 12 this year — of East Bay restaurants.
In a nod to the increasing relevance and excitement of the East Bay food scene, none of the spots cut from the list this year came from our the right side of the Bay.
The two new additions to the East Bay list are both restaurants from James Syhabout. Bauer praised The Dock at Linden Street for its “uncanny skill for matching food to beer” and “unexpected” food combinations. He especially likes Syhabout’s crisp fried cranberry beans, curried lamb riblets with lime pickled chutney, and Caesar popcorn (“the best thing since caramel corn”). … Continue reading »
If you’ve noticed the new wave of ramen places opening lately, you’re not alone. But like everything else, not all ramen restaurants are created equal. Ramen lovers are a discerning bunch, and not every bowl of noodles in fatty broth passes muster. We did the work for you so you can just go slurp and enjoy. Below are six that are worth checking out, though, as always, we’d love to hear about your favorites if they’re not mentioned.
1. Ramen Shop
“Mind Blown.” “Mouthgasm.” Such words don’t come easily from Ramen lovers on Yelp, but since Ramen Shop (pictured top) opened in late 2012, the Rockridge spot has become the gold standard for ramen in the East Bay. Whether it’s the Chez Panisse pedigree, the Japanese noodle machine or the expertly paired cocktails, these guys are doing something right, as evident by the long lines to eat there. In August, it was reported that they’re taking over the former luggage shop next door, and expanding both the dining and bar space. Appetizers include salads, a much-raved about squid and pork fried rice and house-made pickles; ramen usually comes in three types, with one being vegetarian, often a meyer lemon that is so savory and rich that you may not miss the meat. Yelpers give high praise for its chashu (braised pork belly) and shoyu-marinated eggs, not to mention its black sesame ice cream sandwich for dessert. Ramen Shop is at 5812 College Ave., Oakland. TIA’S A new café called Tia’s is set to open imminently at the spot once occupied by the short-lived Levant Organic Café on the corner of Kittredge and Oxford streets in downtown Berkeley. The owner, Dana Zumot, has previously worked as a restaurant manager and her love of cooking led her to open her own place at 2177 Kittredge St. Tia’s will be a casual café serving salads and panini sandwiches, as well as coffee and tea. With its location close to the Cal campus, and its light-filled atmosphere, Zumot is hoping Tia’s becomes a popular hang-out space.
