New restaurants Iyasare, Nido in Chronicle’s Top 100

The phone at Iyasare Restaurant on Fourth Street in Berkeley started to ring a bit more urgently on Friday. Word had leaked out that the Japanese restaurant had been named to the San Francisco Chronicle’s list of top 100 restaurants – one of 20 new places on the list.

It’s already hard to get Friday or Saturday night reservations at Iyasare, a 50-seat restaurant opened by chef Shotaro Kamio and general manager Niall Cantwell just five months ago. Salsipuedes aims for ‘heartfelt cooking’ in Oakland

The much-anticipated new restaurant from Jay Porter, who’s run successful restaurants in Southern California and made waves in the food world by advocating for tipless restaurants, is expected to open in North Oakland’s Longfellow neighborhood later this year.

The new business, called Salsipuedes, is anticipated to open at Market and 42nd streets. It has garnered excitement from neighbors because it will be the first restaurant in the immediate area. Temescal, the growing 40th Street district and Emeryville are nearby, but Longfellow itself has few dining options aside from two popular Ethiopian cafés.

Porter spoke with Nosh this week, sharing the first news about the restaurant since last fall. At that time, Porter was keeping close wraps on exactly where Salsipuedes would open, though he had signed the lease in September. … Continue reading »

Bites: What’s new in East Bay food XXXV

KAIN’BIGAN Filipino comfort food spot Kain’bigan had its soft opening in Oakland this week at 2101 14th Ave. Each day, Chef Charleen Caabay “creates a daily special based on the fresh and seasonal ingredients she finds at local markets throughout the Bay,” according to the company’s website. The business is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and menu offerings include Filipino breakfast with garlic rice, chicken and pork adobo, sweet cured pork sausage, and vegetable or shrimp lumpia (pastries similar to fried egg rolls). Caabay’s restaurant may be new, but she’s not new to the area, having worked at The Den inside the Fox Theater, Somar, Oakland Art Murmur and more. Learn more on Kain’bigan’s Facebook page.

HOI POLLOI Hoi Polloi Brewpub and Beat Lounge, which we first featured in March, is on track with its development plans, having just had its building permit approved Wednesday. The nano-brewpub is set to open in the Lorin District at 1763 Alcatraz Ave., next door to Easy Creole. Owner Viet Vu told Berkeleyside Hoi Polloi will be a “place where people can have conversation,” unhindered by television, with a soundtrack that will run the gamut from underground hip hop to indie rock. The space, with room for 30-40 people, will feature a bar and a few tables, with brew kettles and fermentation tanks in the back. … Continue reading »

What is always in your refrigerator?
Preserved lemons, butter, and for some reason, Prosecco. And chicken stock and last summer’s slow roasted tomatoes in the freezer. Just in case.

What do you cook up for a late night snack?
I don’t usually snack late, but we occasionally eat a pretty late dinner after Stan gets home from work, maybe cooked greens with pasta or eggs, or leftover soft tofu soup. [Stan is Stanislaw Sobolewski, cookbook manager at Moe’s Books.]

Where/what do you eat on your day off? 
So many good places to check out lately, it’s hard to decide, but I love Fusebox in West Oakland, the new Ramen Shop on College Ave., Ippuku in Berkeley, and Duende in downtown Oakland.

Do you have a secret ‘junk food’ vice?

EL GUSANO According to Eater SF, Erin Brooks and Michael Sopher, who own San Francisco’s Tropisueño, opened El Gusano earlier this week in Old Oakland. The menu features Mexican specialties ($3.95-$11) including burritos, tamales and quesadillas, as well as pambazos, a sort of wet torta with chorizo and potato that’s a specialty of Mexico City. Various cocktails, with a focus on mezcal, will be available in the bar. El Gusano, 1015 Clay St., Oakland; 510-444-9676. Hours: Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 5:30-9:30 p.m. Closed Sunday.

EAT + LOUNGE Haig and Cindy Krikorian’s K2 Restaurant Group closed Sea Salt on New Year’s Eve and Inside Scoop reports that it was already scheduled to open again as Eat + Lounge under chef Kwin Vu. (Berkeleyside also reported this in December in our Shop Talk column.) The menu is influenced by the Mediterranean and “more farm-to-table” offerings. TIMELESS COFFEE As the former roaster for Sightglass Coffee in San Francisco, RJ Leimpeter seriously cut down his commute after opening Timeless Coffee in his neighborhood in December. He serves Sightglass Coffee with soy or almond milk — and no dairy alternatives. But don’t worry, my almond latte was creamy and completely satisfying. (Leimpeter also said he has plans to roast his own beans after he gets settled in.) All of the chocolate and baked goods are vegan too, but you would never know it if you didn’t ask. VICTORY BURGER Last week, we gave notice that Victory Burger, a new venture in north Oakland from the folks behind Actual Café, was about to open. Well, the first official day of business was Friday. In addition to the burgers, hand-cut fries and shakes on the menu, there’s also roasted chicken banh mi and both pork and gluten-free veggie arepas (a cornmeal South American street food). There are also several interesting “add-ons” for both the burgers and fries that sound pretty delicious: Avocado Mayo, Chicken Skin Mayo (wait, what?), and Bacon Gravy. INNA JAM INNA Jam, the artisanal preserve company started by former freelance commercial video editor Dafna Kory in Berkeley, moved into a new commercial kitchen in Emeryville at the beginning of the summer, and has been busy processing a big crop of berries and stone fruit since then. Kory also recently opened an INNA Jam store — really just a shelf in the corner of the kitchen. It’s stacked with jars of every jam they make, many of which are not available in retail stores or online. Regular hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdys from 2–5 p.m. (and by appointment).
