Berkeley prisoners in Iran phone home

The three UC Berkeley graduates held in Iran were allowed to phone their relatives for the first time on Tuesday, CNN reports. Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal were detained last July 31 after crossing the border into Iran while on a hiking trip in Iraqi Kurdistan. They are being held on charges of espionage.

No swap for Berkeley prisoners in Iran

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has ruled out a prisoner swap to free the three Berkeley hikers held in Iran. Two days ago, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the hikers could be freed if Iranian prisoners in the U.S. were also freed.

Speaking in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Clinton said, “It is hard to know what the Iranian president meant from these press reports of his comments” about a possible exchange of prisoners.

Iranian President says swap possible for UC students

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today that the three UC Berkeley students detained in Iran and charged with spying may be swapped with jailed Iranians in the United States, Reuters reports.

“We do not like to have any person in jail. Some discussions are going on to swap the three with jailed Iranians in America,” Ahmadinejad told state television. He did not clarify whether the discussions were held with U.S. officials.
