Two panhandlers were arrested early Saturday morning after police say they stabbed two bar patrons on Telegraph Avenue.
According to a statement released by the University of California Police Department, officers responded to a call at about 1:40 a.m. about an assault with a knife that had just taken place on Telegraph.
Two men were leaving a bar near Telegraph and Channing Way when two panhandlers approached them.
“An altercation ensued and the panhandlers stabbed the two bar patrons,” according to UCPD.
Both men were taken to Highland Hospital to be treated for their injuries.
UCPD officers detained two men matching the description of the suspects. They were identified as the people responsible for the assault and were taken into custody by Berkeley police.
The extent of the injuries of the victims is “unknown at this time,” according to UCPD.
The names of the alleged assailants were not released by UCPD, but they were described as two men, ages 29 and 20, with a dog.
According to the Alameda County sheriff’s department, the men arrested were Jacob Salisbury, 20, and Jeremiah Vincent, 29. Salisbury remains in custody at Berkeley Jail with a bail of $30,000. Vincent is no longer in custody.
Both men are scheduled for arraignment Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in downtown Oakland.
Update, 12:02 a.m. Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said the men had no listed home addresses, and are believed to be transient.
