Reporter, Berkeleyside

Berkeleyside is hiring a general assignment Reporter to join a pioneering, award-winning local online newsroom. The successful applicant will be excited to be part of a mission to engage and enrich communities through stellar, civic-minded  journalism. The job is based in Berkeley.

You’ll be joining us at an exciting time in our development. After 10 years building Berkeleyside into a widely recognized, nationally lauded local news site, we are launching an ambitious, nonprofit, mission-driven organization that will embrace Berkeleyside and new city newsrooms. We have core funding from the American Journalism Project and Google News Initiative. Our first new launch will be in Oakland this spring. 

What you’ll do

  • Report and write multiple stories a week, from breaking news to in-depth features, across a range of subjects such as education, transportation, community profiles, business, city government and food coverage
  • Work with the editor and  team to identify and develop stories that meet our editorial mission
  • Take photographs and short videos to accompany your stories
  • Become an accessible, leading source of local information on your beats
  • Work with the team, including the head of audience, to elevate your work and expand its reach through traditional and social media, newsletters, etc.
  • Report to the Berkeleyside Editor-in-Chief

  • Demonstrated ability to serve public information needs, whether through traditional reporting or other means
  • Ability to identify good story ideas that deliver on our mission
  • The ability to maintain the highest journalistic standards under deadline pressure
  • A collaborative spirit
  • Cultural competence: the awareness and knowledge to ensure that our reporting agenda reflects the diversity of Berkeley’s people and communities, and the communication skills to collaborate across lines of difference
  • Openness to public speaking in multiple formats, from radio to TV to live events
  • A radical imagination for what journalism can look like, who it serves, and who can contribute

We’re especially interested in candidates who

  • Have worked in local journalism and have experience building a beat and cultivating sources
  • Are personally grounded in underserved communities represented in Berkeley
  • Have demonstrated experience in community engagement, data-driven reporting, multi-format storytelling or public records
  • Have language skills

How we’ll support you

  • Top-notch editing, in-house mentorship and a transparent internal review and feedback process
  • $1,000 in support for conferences and training related to your beat
  • Training in public speaking and live moderation

The salary for this position is $60,000-$80,000, depending on experience. We offer a health plan, four weeks of paid leave and a 401(k) match.
