A mobilized, vocal group of South Berkeley neighbors, working in concert with local merchants, has prevented a Starbucks from opening in South Berkeley.
More than 1,400 housing units are currently in development in downtown Berkeley, with demolition on one of the first in the pipeline scheduled to begin this week.
A new 69-unit building, with 7,240 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor, has been approved by the city’s zoning board for construction on Addison Street.
An attempt by a group of South Berkeley neighbors to halt, or at least delay, the arrival of a Starbucks at 3001 Telegraph Ave. (at the intersection with Ashby) stumbled last week when the city’s Zoning Adjustments Board denied its appeal.
Update, 03.19.13: Regarding the parking situation in the area, Starbucks is providing four off-street parking spaces inside the building at 3001 Telegraph. As reported in the story below, the city waived a further three that would normally have been required given the size of the space Starbucks is leasing. Avi Nevo, the owner of the building, told Berkeleyside he believes the new building and the coffee shop will create a “vibrant and lively,” pedestrian-focused area within a few months. “I have built eight or nine projects for Berkeley in the past ten years and we always aim to create villages in each one,” he said.
The view from the L-shaped deck off the penthouse apartment at 2055 Center St. is spectacular. One side looks west toward San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Another side offers a sweeping vista of Berkeley’s downtown and hills.
