Logan Park, an eight-story, 204-unit mixed-use housing project slated for downtown Berkeley, is one step closer to breaking ground after the zoning board approved its use permit Thursday night.
The judge said the city could deny Ruegg & Ellsworth’s SB35 application because the site is landmarked, even though there are no significant structures on the property and little shellmound evidence has been found.
That will provide housing for many, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance the neighborhood.
The owners of 1900 Fourth St. sued Berkeley over the city’s denial of their SB35 housing application. The law allows almost automatic approval of complexes where 50% of the units are “affordable.”
Since 2014, there have been 1,022 housing units built, across 17 projects, according to the latest “housing pipeline” report issued by the city. About 842 units, in 15 projects, are expected to be done by 2020.
